SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford explains the steps to property restoration after storm damage

10/16/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford outlines how to effectively restore your damaged property after a storm.

Euless, just like other parts of Texas, experiences extreme weather conditions. A heavy storm can occur suddenly and destroy everything in its path, from trees to utility installations and properties.

If a storm damages your home or business, it's important to act quickly to fix it before the next storm arrives. Prompt damage restoration is vital to protect your property from thieves, insects, reptiles, and others.

SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford is a full-service storm damage restoration company in Euless. Their team has put together the following steps to effectively restore your property after a storm damage incident.

1. Ensure everyone's safety

Storm damage can lead to several devastations that can put anyone close by in harm's way. It can leave behind broken glasses, damaged roofs, exposed electrical connections, fallen trees, and other dangerous items. The first thing to do after an incident is to ensure everyone in your home, office, or facility is safe.

Depending on the level of damage, it may make sense to leave the property until restoration is completed. Evacuate everyone from your property if you believe the roof is shaky until a professional can examine the building. Additionally, keep an eye out for items like glass, sharp objects, and nails.

2. Protect your valuables

After taking the necessary safety precautions, you must protect your belongings from further harm. Storm damage can lead to flooding, damaged windows, roofs, leaky pipes, and more. You may speed up and simplify the repair process after a storm by taking immediate action to secure your property. It's vital to quickly board up any broken window that's still letting water inside the house. Also, cover up any damaged parts of your roof.

If your property is flooded, you'll need to move valuable belongings like wall paintings and other items to a dry area in the building or outside. Contact a damage restoration company immediately if you can't handle any of these yourself.

3. Contact your insurance company and document the damages

If you have insurance, you should be compensated if a storm damages your house or place of business. You must keep a record of the losses you sustain due to the storm. Before anything is moved or removed, take pictures of the damage to document it, and keep track of any additional expenses you incur as a result of the damage.

Your property's insurance company will give you instructions on how to proceed with filing a claim, as well as a claim number and a directory of nearby emergency service providers. Inquiries about your claims will be addressed by the agent, who will also ascertain whether your policy would cover the damage.

4. Contact a storm damage restoration professional

It's crucial to work with a qualified and reliable storm damage restoration company to help you repair storm damage to your property. Poor or insufficient restoration can lead to further damage, putting occupants at risk.

These restoration specialists are experienced in handling storm damage. They will quickly clear up any standing water, board up any damaged windows or roofs, and dry your property.

They can also work with your insurance company to simplify the claim process.

Hiring a storm damage restoration professional will take the burden off you and ensure the task is done quickly and efficiently.

SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford offers fast and reliable flood damage cleanup services in Euless, TX

7/26/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: Here are the key steps to take when dealing with flooding to mitigate the negative impacts.

As a homeowner, it is crucial to understand that floods and water damage can result in significant personal injury and property damage. When faced with a flooding disaster, you need an experienced flood damage cleanup professional who can quickly restore your home to its pre-disaster condition.

SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford offers fast and reliable flood damage cleanup service to residents and businesses throughout Euless, TX, and surrounding areas.

However, calling a professional storm damage restoration specialist is one of the strings of steps you can take to recover from the flood damage. Professionals recommend taking the following steps when dealing with floods to minimize the financial impact.

Stay safe

The top priority is your safety. Although your first instinct may be to commence the cleanup immediately, you need to protect yourself from potential dangers that may develop from the situation. For example, the water may have been contaminated by sewage.

Some of the things you can do to stay safe include, but are not limited to shutting off gas and electricity, wearing rubber boots, and disinfecting your well. In addition, you should have your first aid kit handy to treat minor injuries that may have occurred when the disaster was ongoing.

Turn Off the Utilities

If there is a major disaster such as floods, it is advisable to turn off essential utilities such as water, gas, and electricity. In a severe flood, you could be at risk of electrical shock if you leave your electricity on. If necessary, you may need to call your power supplier to immediately disconnect your property from the electricity supply to safeguard you, your loved ones, and your home.

Examine your home for damage

After the flood has subsided and it is now safe to access your home, you need to carefully examine the property to have a better look at the level of damage. You need to pay special attention to areas such as walls, floors, windows, and your basement. This also includes examining personal belongings and items such as furniture.

You can bring in a professional to perform a post-disaster inspection to determine what area needs restoration and develop the best approach to get the restoration done in time and correctly.

Document everything

Some homeowners insurance or renter insurance policies cover natural disasters such as floods. Having damage resulting from a flood covered in your insurance policy is a great way to recover most, if not all, of the costs of property recovery.

If eligible, you can file a claim to your insurer. To back up your claims, you need to present convincing evidence showing affected items. Therefore, take photos of the damaged floor, roof, wall, furniture, and reports of the first responder.

Although your insurance company will appoint their adjuster, you can also hire an independent specialist to assess the damage and evaluate the cost of repair and replacement.

Call a professional flood cleanup service

If you experience a major flooding case, you may need to enlist the service of a professional. A professional can inspect the damage done by the flood, and then develop the right strategy to perform the necessary cleanup.

Work with the best flood damage cleanup company in Euless, TX

Restoring valuable contents damaged by a storm

After a storm subsides, it is a long journey towards a normal life. From restoring the property, contacting the insurance company, to moving back, it is a process. Often water and mold can damage precious contents that have legal, financial, or sentimental value for an owner. Can these be saved? SERVPRO, a storm damage restoration, and commercial cleaning service shares its expertise in restoring contents damaged by water and mold after a storm. Before beginning its content restoration process, the SERVPRO team conducts an organized move out to enable a swift remodeling process and protect the valuable contents from further damage.

# 1 Contents cleaning

SERVPRO uses various technologies to clean different types of content. For light residues, dry cleaning is the ideal method while wet cleaning helps remove moderate to heavy residues. Some contents can’t be cleaned, and just a spray-and-wipe method would work better. Upholstery fabrics that could shrink or bleed would be foam cleaned. Abrasive and immersion cleaning are other methods of cleaning available.

# 2 Electronic Cleanup

Electrical devices must be cleaned at the earliest to prevent further corrosion and damage. Without being cleaned and inspected by a qualified technician, property owners should avoid using these devices for their own safety.

# 3 Document/Photograph Drying

SERVPRO’s Document Restoration Facility is a state-of-the-art lab where its HIPPA Master-certified technicians handle damaged valuable documents, including photographs, manuscripts, x-rays, parchment, maps, and other business/legal/confidential records with extreme caution. # 4 Get an inventory

A storm can be an overwhelming experience and keeping track of all contents can seem impossible. SERVPRO makes this easy with its Contents Claim Inventory Service which clicks digital photographs of every item room-by-room and barcodes them to create an inventory. This detailed and accurate report not only gives owners peace of mind but also helps in the preloss evaluation of contents and creates hassle-free proof for claims to help settle claims swiftly.

SERVPRO: Debunking Some Storm Damage Myths For Homeowners

4/29/2022 (Permalink)

Blog summary: SERVPRO Busts The Myths About Storm Damage That Mislead Homeowners, Leading To Further Losses. This Blog Shares The Facts About Storm Damage.

Busting Storm Damage Myths

When a storm arrives, there is little control over the consequences. But being well-informed and prepared is a great tactic to mitigate losses and prevent further property damage. A lot of myths often surround storm damage that cause homeowners immense loss simply due to misinformation. SERVPRO, a flood restoration service in Bedford, busts these myths to help homeowners make the right decisions at the right time when it comes to storm damage restoration.

Myth #1: Storm damage signs are always visible

Fact: Minor cracks, small punctures, or small dents are not always visible or taken seriously. However, a thorough inspection by a professional roof expert may reveal that these minor and often invisible signs of storm damage can escalate into major structural threats and sources of water damage. A roof that has not collapsed or isn’t showing visible signs of damage does not indicate it is undamaged. Once the storm is over, just a visual survey of the property is not enough. The hidden signs of roof damage can be:

  • Shingle bruises

A roof shingle that gets displaced or blown away during a storm is easily noticeable but spotting a shingle bruise would need a closer and professional eye. What are shingle bruises? They are small, dark spots on the shingles where an impact of hail causes the granules to come loose.

  • Nicks & dents in soft metals

Hailstorms can cause nicks and dents in the soft metals of the roof. Ideally, after a hailstorm, the roof must be inspected for dents that may reveal, upon closer inspection, that the shingles have been bruised as well.

  • Loose granules

Roofs lose granules over time but a storm can increase the loss of granules by a huge margin. This often goes unnoticed as these granules are usually found on the ground or in the gutters. Only a roofing professional can recognize these minor and almost invisible flaws in the roof and prevent further disintegration.

Myth #2: Roofing warranties cover all storm damage

Fact: A new roofing system does not include all storm-related warranties. Most roofing companies and manufacturers exclude storm and hail damage from roof warranties. If homeowners update the coverage, a roofing warranty will still not be enough if the storm damage is undocumented and left unaddressed.

Myth #3: Avoid filing a claim to avoid an increase in premium

Fact: When a storm affects an area, an insurance company will automatically raise the home insurance rates in that area, whether a claim is filed or not. A property in a storm-prone area and a history of filed claims will most likely lead to a hike in the premium. When a house undergoes storm damage, it is advised to make swift insurance claims even in case of minor damages and initiate the restoration process.

Myth #4: Minor damage doesn’t need to be claimed

Fact: A minor damage can quickly turn into a full-fledged restoration project if not addressed in time. Homeowners can make insurance claims even with a minor damage situation. Once this minor problem changes into major roof problems, insurance companies can deny the claim attributing negligence as the cause of damage.

Myth #5 Filing a claim can lead to the cancellation of the policy

Fact: By law, an insurance company cannot cancel a policy if the homeowner is paying premiums on time.

Homeowners must contact a professional flood restoration service such as SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford for a swift and smooth restoration process. The qualified technicians will assess and document the storm damage, take necessary actions to correct the damage, and help homeowners in filing their insurance claims.

Tips on How to Reduce Flood Damage by Acting Quickly

2/28/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO, Hurst, TX’s experienced and knowledgeable water damage restoration team, details the best ways to mitigate flood damage within the initial hours after a flood.

Why You Need to Act Fast When There’s a Flood

In the aftermath of flood damage due to a heavy storm, ground water, or water damage from a burst pipe in the basement, homeowners must act within the first 24-48 hours to help prevent secondary water damage from setting in and becoming a much larger project to restore. SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford is among TX’s premier mold remediation companies and can arrive at the scene promptly to help prevent further damage.

Often, homeowners try to reverse the damage on their own, but this only delays the process further, allowing water damage to occur continuously until they eventually seek the help of water damage restoration companies

Outlined below are the steps a homeowner or business owner in Hurst, TX, should take to best combat residential or commercial water damage.

Avoid Additional Risks and Act Safely

Immediately after a storm that causes flooding, families should check for their safety before sifting around or re-entering. The Federal Emergency Management Agency warns families to check for visible structural damage like loosened or cracked foundation before returning home.

Likewise, homeowners should contact utility companies and stay clear of areas with the most flood damage if they suspect gas or electric lines sustained damage in the disaster. Entering a dangerous site is never worth the risk, especially if a professional water damage restoration team is already on the way.

Get the Right Water Cleanup Team on the Job ASAP

A flood presents an emergency for many homeowners and business owners. For that reason, homeowners should contact an emergency water damage restoration team the moment they notice flooding.

Hiring an experienced water and mold removal company is the quickest way to reverse any damage. Industrial-level equipment will always do a better job than equipment homeowners could rent or buy.

Find a company with stunning reviews known for a variety of damage restoration services including commercial cleaning services. A company who has satisfied clients in all areas of damage restoration including fire, flood, water, mold remediation, and commercial cleaning will give you confidence in the level of service you will receive.

How to Prepare for the Water Damage Restoration Company

In the aftermath of a major storm or flooding event, the damage restoration company may take some time to arrive due to road conditions, increased need for services, and other factors. A reputable company will be able to provide a home or business owner with tips on how to assist with prevention of secondary water damage or microbial growth while waiting for professionals to arrive.

While waiting for the water damage restoration service to arrive, homeowners should take pictures and videos of the damage and contact their insurance companies. They should next remove all wet items from the home if it is safe to do so.

Ultimately, a homeowner cannot do a lot to reverse the water damage. Instead, they may need to leave the premises so that the water and fire restoration companies can arrive at the scene and begin working as quickly as possible.

Flood Damage Restoration from SERVPRO

The best way to prevent secondary water damage in the 24 hours after a flood is by calling SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford, Hurst, TX’s go-to fire and water restoration company. The sooner a homeowner acts, the easier a water cleanup company can clean up the mess and return them home to normal.

SERVPRO is always prepared to respond to any weather conditions when an emergency occurs. Immediate action mitigates flood damage, and there’s no way to combat the damage effectively without enlisting the help of a professional service company.

What are the preventative measures businesses can take in anticipation of winter storms?

12/21/2021 (Permalink)

Blog summary: The SERVPRO blog gives insight into the 6 crucial steps that businesses can take to mitigate winter storm damage.

6 smart steps to protect businesses from winter storm damage

As winter storms arrive, they bring with them massive destruction to property and the economy. Businesses must take preventive measures to protect themselves in the event of a winter storm. SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford, a flood damage restoration company, shares some tips below.

An average winter storm in the US can cost $3.9 billion per event. Although the characteristics of winter weather vary with location, every business faces varying threats as winter nears. A small business or a large-scale enterprise must have a winter weather preparedness to mitigate the impact of such incidents on employees, customers, and the bottom line.

With the NOAA forecasts for La Niña being very similar to the 2020-2021 season- the worst winter storm on record for parts of the South- all businesses including ones in warmer areas must take winter weather preparations seriously.

Here are six steps to protect a business all season long.

Step 1: Assess the risks

The various hazards businesses need to watch out for during cold weather are:

  • Icy roads and snow accumulation
  • structural stress and damage
  • Dangerous fire activity
  • Slip and fall injuries
  • Seasonal illnesses
  • Unsafe driving conditions
  • Road closures
  • Flight delays and cancellations
  • Local school delays and closures
  • Electrical fires and other hazards
  • Power/systems outages (both in the workplace and for employees working remotely)

Assessing the unique risks that a business faces is imperative for the preparation of a plan. Factors such as the location of employee residences, office location, type of industry, employees' work routine are some of the questions that help identify the threats that must be considered while making winter storm preparation plans. For instance, the increase in remote work presents its unique safety and preparedness challenges.

In the event of a storm forecast, the management must vigilantly check local news and follow travel safety recommendations to stay atop the regional threats.

Step 2: Delegate responsibility

Assigning the responsibility for the safety of employees as well as the business facility is important to ensure there is no confusion during the emergency event. All processes and responsible parties must be laid out for internal functions such as keeping employees informed of rapidly developing situations, ensuring all employees are accounted for and keeping facilities and equipment in safe operating condition.

Any organization is accountable for its employees’ overall safety and well-being for which all necessary safety precautions must be taken. A project team of involved stakeholders must be assembled to clearly outline the roles and responsibilities of each function. A clear, documented plan of who will do what during a winter storm is important to help avoid confusion, finger-pointing, and missteps during the emergency.

Step 3: Plan for each threat

A specific action plan must be prepared for each winter storm threat that has been identified. From extreme cold, freezing rain, heavy snow to carbon monoxide poisoning, and blizzard warnings, a specific plan must be created. The people responsible for each storm threat management must be kept in the loop to eliminate ambiguity. These people including employees and managers must be trained to watch out for signs of hypothermia, frostbite, and other health threats.

A winter storm preparation checklist must be prepared with each step explained elaborately. Include preparation items like filling gas tanks, dripping faucets, and buying extra supplies. All these winter weather scenarios must be rehearsed in drills with key leaders and people managers while employees must be trained on the safety measures during the seasons.

Step 4: Fortify against extreme cold

A business facility must be fortified to withstand winter threats and hazards. Regular inspections and maintenance of offices, supplies, and equipment must be conducted. Carbon monoxide detectors, elevators to walkways, and evacuation routes must be checked. These regular inspections allow timely maintenance and a functional system.

Additionally, a power outage backup plan must be made. Winter storms often knock out power lines, which can hamper employee productivity, threaten employee safety, and impede vital business operations. From keeping a variety of portable chargers and battery banks and investing in a backup generator to a secure data backup solution and communication plan, an organization must take necessary preventative measures before a storm arrives.

Step 5: Equip the people

Employees must be prepared and provided with the equipment and resources they need to stay safe.

  • Share tips with employees on staying safe this winter, at home or work.
  • Review space heater and backup generator safety reminders.
  • Ensure employees that work outdoors have adequate protective clothing and know how to recognize the warning signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
  • Company vehicles should be serviced before the winter season to ensure the battery, tire tread, windshield wipers, and antifreeze levels are satisfactory.
  • Make sure that employees have access to emergency supplies at home, at work, and while driving.
  • Stock up on winter safety essentials at the facility such as flashlights and first-aid supplies.
  • Make a winter emergency vehicle kit for employees who travel for work.

Step 6: Keep everyone informed

Build a communication plan for how and who needs to be contacted when a winter storm hits. Have accurate contact information on hand for third parties such as clients, vendors, utility providers, the landlord, and insurance company. Identify how storm-related information will be disseminated and maintain contact with employees during winter weather events. Have a plan to inform clients and supplies about important information such as office closures or delayed openings. An emergency communication system—with features such as multichannel delivery, two-way messaging, and pre-built communication templates can help when there are power outages.

How does lightning damage a house?

10/20/2021 (Permalink)

Blog summary: The SERVPRO article gives insight into the impact of lightning on a house. It also discusses simple measures for protection during a lightning storm.

When lightning strikes a house

Lightning is the occurrence of a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground or within a cloud. This violent and sudden electrostatic discharge generates a bright flash and thunder. SERVPRO, a storm restoration company, explains the impact of a lightning strike on a house.

What Happens When Lightning Strikes a House

A cloud-to-ground lightning bolt will find the path of least resistance from the cloud to deep into the ground. Most houses have a path that the lightning can follow, causing immense damage in its wake. From gas and water pipes, electric lines, phone lines, cable TV/internet lines to gutters, downspouts, and metal window frames, any reasonable conductor becomes an opportunity for the lightning to continue its journey

Only a home with a professionally installed lightning protection system can prevent a direct lightning strike. It is important to be aware of how lightning can damage a house and the dangers it poses. Here are some damages that may occur to a house when lightning strikes:

  • Shock wave damage: Lightning can crack and break bricks, concrete, stone, and even cinder blocks. It can damage chimneys which are made from brick and stone. Lightning's shock waves can blow out plaster walls, shatter glass windows, create trenches in soil, and crack foundations.
  • Power surge damage: The electrical system of a house is the most common point of entry of increased voltage from a lightning or surge event. When lightning strikes a nearby power line, it can travel from the power line to the meter and then into the home’s electrical panel into the home’s wiring, burning the insulation and fusing the wires. It can travel through the wiring to the outlets and damage the electrical appliances as well. This can be a potential fire hazard as well.
  • Fire damage: A house is made of highly flammable materials such as wood. As lightning travels through the house, it can easily ignite a fire. The attic or the roof is the most common area where lightning can start a fire since it has to pass through some structural material before reaching a conductive path. As the wiring or the pipes come in contact with lightning, a fire hazard becomes a very imminent possibility.

Preventive measures

It is always wise to take preventive measures in anticipation of a storm.

  • Trim the trees: Tall objects attract lightning. A tall tree near a house can become a possible direct route for lightning to enter the house. So trimming the trees close to the house is a safety measure homeowners can take.
  • Pay attention to the shingles: Repair and replace shingles that are damaged or missing to protect the house from a devastating lightning strike. Ideally, replace shingles made from wood with shingles made from fire-resistant asphalt, tile, or metal to prevent possible fires.
  • Be cautious: During the storm, avoid direct contact with any potential lightning routes. Appliances or landlines should be avoided. Do not take a bath or do dishes during the storm. And unplug the computers and large appliances.

SERVPRO: Hurricane myths busted

9/23/2021 (Permalink)

Blog summary: The SERVPRO blog discusses the myths that surround hurricanes and shares the truth.

SERVPRO busts hurricane myths

Hurricanes are a force of nature that wreak havoc in their wake. While this phenomenon is not in anyone’s control, preparing for it is possible. There are, however, many myths around hurricanes that lead to poor decision-making by citizens and jeopardizes their lives. SERVPRO busts these common myths surrounding hurricanes.

Myth #1: A Category 1 hurricane is nothing to worry about

A category 1 hurricane as per the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind scale comes with sustained wind speeds of 74 to 95 miles per hour. The scale has five levels with Category 5 hurricanes that pack sustained winds of 157+ miles per hour that can destroy everything in its path and make the area inhabitable.

Even though a higher category storm causes greater devastation, a Category 1 storm can damage the roofs and siding of solidly built homes, damage trees, and cause power outages for days. Therefore, it must not be taken lightly.

Myth #2: High winds are the most dangerous aspect of a hurricane

Wind speeds of up to 157+ miles per hour wreak havoc on life and property but the maximum damage is caused by flooding due to heavy rainfall and storm surges. Storm surge occurs when strong winds push the water into shore, leading to flooding. Nearly half of the fatalities in the US are caused by storm surges whereas heavy rainfall accounts for 25 percent of the fatalities.

Myth #3: Hurricanes affect only the coastline

The maximum damage is located along the coast but people living inland need to be prepared for extensive rainfalls, high winds, storm surges, and possible tornadoes that follow. Storm-surge flooding can reach inland well beyond 10 miles, and heavy hurricane rainfall often leads to inland river flooding far from the shoreline. Moreover, all tropical storm and hurricane warnings are issued based on their potential impact on the inland areas.

Myth #4: Taping an X on windows will keep them from breaking

Taping a big X over the windows will not prevent the debris from crashing through the windows and inside the house. Installing storm shutters over windows and glass doors or nailing temporary plywood boards over the glass is what helps.

Myth #5: Opening the doors will stabilize air pressure inside the house

Another existing myth is that opening doors or windows during a hurricane or tornado will stabilize the air pressure between the house’s interior and exterior. This will, in fact, not make any difference in the pressure dynamics but will expose the house to flying debris and flooding.

Myth #6: It’s OK to wait and watch how bad the storm gets before evacuating

Once an evacuation is announced, many people choose to remain at home trying to protect their belongings or in the hope that the storm will not be so bad. This not only puts the life of the inhabitants at risk but also jeopardizes the lives of responders. It is important to follow the weather reports on the storm, prepare for its arrival, and be ready to leave when the government announces emergency evacuation.

Myth #7: Only windows and the roof are prone to hurricane damage

Window and the roof are often damaged by the hurricane but another area that causes major damage is garage doors. Since garage doors are large yet jointed, high winds can destabilize them and pull them off their tracks or collapse. Thereafter, winds can enter a home through the garage door and cause serious damage. Getting a garage door that is hurricane-proof or reinforcing the door with a garage door retrofit kit can help take care of this vulnerability.

Myth #8: An upper-story apartment or room is safer than being at a low level

The Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends taking shelter on a lower level as the wind speed is more intense at higher levels and increases the risk of broken windows and flying debris. Higher up means more danger.

In case of storm damage to a property, homeowners must contact professional storm damage restoration teams such as SERVPRO to help restore their homes swiftly and efficiently.

Tips for insurance claims after storm damage

As mother nature wreaks havoc on homes and businesses alike, the path to restoration of property and normal life may seem daunting. One of the major tasks that lie before property owners is filing for insurance claims. SERVPRO shares tips to make the best of insurance claims after a storm damage event:

Research and hire a professional storm damage restoration company like SERVPRO. Not only will a professional team provide an accurate damage and repair estimate but will also help with insurance claims. Make sure the contractor hired to repair the damage is reputable, established, licensed, bonded, and insured. Beware of out-of-state “storm chasers” ? contractors who swoop into town after a big storm.

  1. Review the policy

Knowledge is a powerful weapon. Acquire an in-depth understanding of the policy, how to proceed, and what to expect help in a fruitful claim discussion. Since every insurance policy and claim is different, reviewing the policy gives better clarity.

  1. Contact the insurer quickly

Provide the insurer with the policy number, latest phone number, and email address. Give an accurate description of the extent of the property damage and any special needs. A claim should promptly be started and the insurance adjuster’s visit scheduled. In case of a flood insurance claim, reach out to the agent who sold the policy to file the claim. Document every conversation with the time, date, and name of the representative spoken to.

  1. Document the damage

Click photographs and document the details of damaged items, including the date of purchase and approximate value—and collect receipts, if any. Many companies request an inventory of the items. Survey the house and document every item, including high-value ones, room-by-room.

  1. Check before discarding

Take pictures of damaged items that need to be discarded for safety as per the local municipality rules. The insurance adjuster usually needs to see the damaged item physically or in pictures.

  1. Stay updated

Remain alert about the status of the insurance claim filed. Most insurance companies use SMS/text message alerts for a claim filed, estimate availability, and payment made.

  1. Keep a claim diary

In all the flurry of activity post a storm incident, things may become blurry and confusing. Pen down everything in a claim notebook to ensure nothing goes amiss:

  • All calls about the claim - name, title, and contact information; and the date, time, and issues discussed.
  • Notes from every phone conversation
  • Recap of insurance adjuster’s visit, including name, date, and notes about the inspection
  • List of any expenses incurred till date, including receipts

The damage caused by thunderstorms and winter storms and how SERVPRO can help

5/17/2021 (Permalink)

Blog summary: SERVPRO offers its storm restoration services that include fire, water, and mold remediation as well as roof tarping expertise in case of damage caused by thunderstorms and winter storms.

Thunderstorms and winter storms damage?

The US experiences thunderstorms and winter storms that can cause extensive damage to homes and commercial properties. It is important to ascertain the damage caused and to contract a specialized storm restoration company like SERVPRO, at the earliest.

Thunderstorms are violent, short-lived weather disturbances that are usually accompanied by lightning, thunder, dense clouds, heavy rain or hail, and strong gusty winds. Below are the common thunderstorm damages:

  1. Hail storm damage: Thunderstorms can produce hail that can be devastating to personal property. Smaller hail can destroy crops while larger ones can dent cars, break windows, and damage roofs. Hailstorms can lead to serious roof leaks that can spiral out of control, leading to structural problems.
  2. Tornado damage: A tornado can cause massive structural damages to buildings with its strong winds and the debris that it carries in its wake. The most violent tornadoes with wind speeds of up to 300 mph can destroy large buildings, uproot trees and hurl vehicles hundreds of yards.
  3. Lightning damage: Lightning that hits trees and the ground is often responsible for wildfires, structure fires, property damage, and power outages. When a property is struck by lightning, electricity passes through the wiring causing severe damage to any electrical appliances that are plugged in.
  4. Flood damage: Thunderstorms often bring in torrential downpours of rain that can flood homes, basements, and businesses, causing serious damage to both interiors and exteriors. Floods are typically the result of heavy rain and water that rises faster than storm drains can manage.

Winter storms are precipitation that is mainly snow, sleet, or freezing rain. Often coupled with strong winds and below-freezing temperatures, winter storms can be dangerous.

  1. Water damage: Cold snaps and temperatures below 20 degrees Fahrenheit can cause pipes to freeze and burst. The resulting water damage can be extensive.
  2. Fire damage: Unattended fireplaces, improperly cleaned chimneys, or space heaters plugged into overloaded outlets or left too close to flammable objects, can cause fires during a winter storm.
  3. Roof damage: The additional weight of snow and ice can damage gutters and cause a roof to collapse. When there’s a cold snap, water can get into cracks and small spaces and expand when it freezes, causing larger cracks and more damage. The cycle repeats worsening the damage caused.
  4. An ice dam: Snow often melts unevenly on a roof and refreezes into a dam at the edge of the roof, near the eaves. This ice dam prevents any further snowmelt from draining off of the roof. This standing water can cause significant water damage to ceilings, walls, and other areas. Ice dams can also tear off gutters and loosen shingles.

How can SERVPRO fix the damage?

  1. Water and mold damage restoration

Flooding caused by thunderstorms and winter storms can cause severe water and mold damage to properties. A water and mold restoration company like SERVPRO can swiftly and effectively bring the property back to its original state.

The team uses a scientific approach for water removal and cleanup that emphasizes monitoring and documenting the drying process from beginning to end.

  1. Fire damage restoration

Fire caused by lightning or damaged appliances during a winter storm must be handled by a specialized team of technicians to ensure the safety of the property. SERVPRO has been successfully implementing fire damage restoration for businesses and homes alike.

  1. Roof damage restoration

Falling trees, fire, high wind, and hail storms often cause roof damage. Initial roof assessment by a professional team, such as SERVPRO, is imperative for safety. Tarping the roof prevents secondary damage while the roof is inspected and repaired. An emergency board-up service can also be provided to protect the building from weather, animals, and illegal entry.

  1. Disaster recovery team

4 Key Facts Property Owners Should Know About Storm Damage Restoration

4/20/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: The SERVPRO professionals discuss four important facts about effective storm damage restoration in Hurst-Euless-Bedford, Texas, and the surrounding communities.

Have storms damaged property or buildings in the area? SERVPRO of Hurst - Euless- Bedford, TX, has many years of experience in offering a reliable storm damage restoration service. Their professionals provide the latest water removal and cleanup techniques, ensuring quick and effective residential and commercial water damage solutions.

Here are some other facts that property owners need to know about storm damage restoration services, including water and fire restoration companies like SERVPRO:

SERVPRO of Hurst - Euless- Bedford, TX, Explains Four Facts About Storm Damage Restoration

#1: Thunderstorms Are The Leading Cause of Storm Damage

While hurricanes and tornadoes devastate communities and make the news, thunderstorms are more frequent and often more destructive. These common events are responsible for more than half of all storm damage to properties in the United States, and that’s before the ill-effects of brush fires ignited by lightning strikes, standing water, and flooding.

The repair experts at SERVPRO have seen the devastation of fire and water damage after a storm. The quickest solution is a speedy water cleanup from their professional service, especially after a severe downpour or flooding.

#2: Types of Storm Damage Restoration

While thunderstorms are frequent, the destruction depends on the storm and how severe the conditions get each season in Texas.

  • Hail produced in thunderstorms can be as big as a softball and fall at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. The ice can easily smash holes in roofing and windows, allowing the elements into a building and causing severe water damage.
  • Lightning is powerful, bringing trees crashing down to open gaping holes in a property where rain and debris enter. Compromised properties are structurally unsound, and it is essential to call in SERVPRO’s building restoration service to avoid future complications. For example, protecting properties with tarping stops further damage and prevents the need for mold removal as moisture stays outside.
  • Flooding is equally dangerous. Texas thunderstorms typically last for about an hour and cover an area of approximately 15 miles, so streams and rivers in the area often overflow. Flash floods fill properties, and rain saturates the ground with nowhere to escape—a flood cleanup on speed dial might prove more useful than expected.

Water damage restoration companies like SERVPRO can quickly cover holes using roof tarping and other techniques. If there’s a flood or tree damage in progress, rather call the SERVPRO professionals for their 24/7 emergency service. Their equipment holds off the worst effects until the storm damage restoration can begin in earnest.

#3: Hurricanes and Tornadoes Cause the Most Wind Damage

It is a well-known fact that extreme winds associated with hurricanes topple buildings and trees. These destructive forces also rip the roofs off any standing structure and expose a home or business to untold water damage and debris. Quick action by a storm damage restoration company like SERVPRO minimizes secondary damage—they even do an air duct cleaning service to ensure those channels provide pure air flow after a hurricane has run its course.

#4: Rapid Water Removal and Flood Damage Restoration is Essential

After a storm, water flow can still destroy the items in and around a property with floods, pooling, mold, and bacteria. If the home or business owner acts quickly, these items could be salvageable. However, they would need to be thoroughly dried to avoid mold growth and other deterioration.

The structure must also be thoroughly and professionally dried and aired. If not, the property might become a health and safety hazard, adding considerable expense when calling in any mold remediation companies. SERVPRO’s affiliation with national water restoration companies ensures its technicians offer local customers access to the latest equipment and know-how, which is the perfect way to handle floods and other water damage.

The SERVPRO team offers outstanding service and many years of experience in storm damage restoration, including emergency services, reliable cleanup assistance, and an interesting  Instagram feed. It is locally owned and operated from 3717 Commerce Place Suite E, Bedford, TX 76021, and the SERVPRO technicians are available at (817) 595-0004.

The Ultimate Guide to Storm Damage Restoration

12/11/2020 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: Surviving a significant storm is a stressful event, and dealing with the restoration is not always easy. The pros at SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford demystify the process by outlining what to expect so you can get quick and easy storm damage restoration.

The Ultimate Guide to Storm Damage Restoration

According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, 2019 was the most active year for climate disasters, costing Americans $40 billion in property damages.

Storms can cause significant property damage, which, if left unattended, can render a home uninhabitable. Hailstorms and strong winds can make roofs unusable, while heavy rainfall can cause flooding and water damage throughout the property.

SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford knows that storm damage repair is often a lengthy and costly process. However, they want to help homeowners make the process easier and understandable. Here’s their guide on getting your home back to normal after a storm.

Contact the Insurance Company

Most homeowner's insurance policies will cover some aspects of storm damage, so your first step is to get in touch with the insurance agency. You can help the insurance adjuster by taking photos of the damage, but most companies will also send out their own assessor to the property. They will evaluate the extent of the damage to see how much compensation you need.

Many local homeowners are shocked to find that their insurance doesn't cover hail, windstorms, or natural flooding. If you have a standard homeowner's insurance policy, it would be wise to take out additional coverage. The last thing you want is to be stuck without coverage after a bad Texas storm.

Find a Storm Damage Restoration Company

Even small incidents of hail can cause significant damage, so it's smart to call a restoration company to assess your property. Even a single missing roof tile can result in thousands of dollars of water damage if left unattended.

In many cases, your insurer will provide recommendations on a building restoration service, but that doesn't mean that owners can't do their own research. Friends and relatives can give recommendations, and online reviews are everywhere.

If you’re in a rush, SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford can handle every aspect of restoration, from water removal and flood cleanup to a fire damage restoration service and even mold removal.

The Restoration Process

The restoration begins by making sure any existing issues don't worsen. Some repairs may take days to complete, so these will need to be patched up before the complete restoration takes place.

An unseen issue, such as an electrical problem, can pose a huge threat. For this reason, the sooner the company starts working on the property, the better.

Most storm, water, and fire restoration companies recommend that homeowners don't try to enter the property or use any electrical appliances after a storm. Amateur water cleanup attempts can make the situation even worse, and homeowners lack the gear and training to clean up a damaged home safely.

The restoration process will depend on the type of damage and the extent of the damage. For example, water restoration companies might be able to remove standing water and dry out all surfaces in as little as two days. On the other hand, fire restoration companies might need weeks to remove rubble and ensure all wiring is safe.

Any good restoration company will understand that the possibility of losing a home is stressful. They should approach clients with a kind and professional demeanor, as well as explain each step of the process.

How Often Should You Be Replacing Your Roof?

10/7/2020 (Permalink)

When it comes to knowing how often you should replace your roof, there really isn’t any hard and fast rule. You have to keep an eye on its condition to be able to tell if you need to start thinking about it. If your roof is showing signs of damage, that could lead to major water or storm damage to the rest of your home. Our team wanted to share a few potential issues your roof may develop; any one of these may mean it’s time to replace your roof.

Age

An asphalt shingle roof should last between 20 and 30 years, so if you have a 40-year-old roof, just keep in mind that you will probably need to replace it entirely in the next 1-5 years.

Shingles

Shingles can curl in two ways: by “cupping,” which happens when the edges of the shingles turn upward; and “clawing,” which is when the edges stay flat and the middle starts to come up. Both are signs of weathering and indicate that potential leaks may possibly be developing, depending on the extent. Every homeowner finds themselves replacing a missing shingle, but it can be just about impossible to get a new shingle to match the color of an old one. Granule colors have changed pretty significantly over the years, and shingle colors often change with years of weathering. If your roof is starting to look like a patchwork quilt, you may want to consider replacing it soon.

Damage

Cracked shingles are typically caused by wind damage, and if the damage is extensive and not isolated to just one area, you should start thinking about replacing your roof within the next few years.

Algae Or Moss

This is not a big deal when it shows up on your roof, but it doesn’t give your home or business a great look. You don’t want to take matters into your own hands by power washing or scraping it away since that will often chip off all the protective granules and essentially render your shingles useless. You can use a wash that's one part bleach and one part water to remove algae or moss, and if you do decide to replace your roof, consider tiles that are algae-resistant.

Light

This issue is pretty obvious: if light can get in through your roof, so can rain. If you see any water stains during the next rainfalls, and if they spread or expand, you have an active leak, and it is time to contact SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford immediately to help remediate the water damage and potential mold growth.

Sagging

A sagging roof is typically an indication of a structural issue and demands immediate attention. There could be a problem with the decking in the attic or with the supports in the foundation, which is even worse. You're not necessarily in imminent danger, but this is the kind of thing that's a lot easier to take care of when it's small and localized, so call your roofing professionals right away for this roofing issue.

When it comes to replacing your roof, there is no hard and fast rule. If you are experiencing water damage, it is probably time. Remember that SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford is here to help if you are dealing with water damage, fire damage, or a mold infestation. We are committed to getting your business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned!

Getting Your North Texas Home Ready for Fall Season Storms

9/30/2020 (Permalink)

Getting your home ready for the colder temperatures and stormy weather conditions of fall is smart, whether you are a homeowner, a business owner, or both. Weather may be unpredictable during the fall here in North Texas, but you won’t have to worry about it if you prepare now. Here at SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford, we have some preparation projects for you to consider:

  • Remove dead leaves and debris from your gutters and drainpipes. This will prevent clogging during wetter weather. Drain all outdoor faucets ahead of freezing weather now, as well.
  • While late summer is not the time to heavily prune trees and bushes, it is a good time to remove any branches that are dead or look like they could prove dangerous during a fall storm. If you have a tree that you think may be dead or dying, contact an arborist to come and take a look at it. If it is actually dead and near your house, you will want to have it removed before anything happens during a fall storm.
  • Examine all your windows and doors for cracks. If you find any, have them sealed now so that you can stay warm and save energy this fall and winter. You’ll be saving both time and money here!
  • A roof inspection ahead of colder weather will tell you if your roofing needs any attention before fall storms. Loose shingles can be replaced more easily when it’s warm and dry outside. If you have siding on your home, look it over well for any loose sections; fall storms bring wind that can create problems here.
  • Make sure your entrance walkways are in good shape with no buckling or crumbling. When the surrounding ground is wet it can compromise cement, causing it to crack and split, and that’s an accident just waiting to happen.

If you need help with the job of preparing your home for the upcoming stormy season, just call the professional team here at SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford. We have the experience and skills needed to take care of your property and belongings to keep them safe. We can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, too!

Manage Flood Damage in your North Texas Business

9/28/2020 (Permalink)

During storm season here in North Texas, your business may experience some damage from flooding. Here are some tips you can follow to manage flood damage in your Hurst, Euless, or Bedford business:

Safety First!

  • Do not enter the building until a professional has cleared it if you believe that it has been structurally damaged or if flood risk remains.
  • Do not go anywhere near downed power lines or any standing water or metal objects near these downed wires. Stay away from damaged trees, and do not wade into floodwaters.
  • Avoid using open flames, especially indoors. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.
  • Once the worst has passed, assess any and all damage that the building has received. Inspect every part of the property for possible destruction, including machinery, making sure to avoid standing water or using electricity.
  • Do not climb onto your roof unless the building has been deemed structurally sound, and practice precaution when climbing and working on ladders.
  • If using a chainsaw to cut fallen or damaged trees or branches, take precautions to ensure they do not cause any more damage when they fall.
  • Remove any wet material, such as rugs or carpets, and properly dry them out to prevent mold from establishing itself. Dry your premises by opening windows and doors; it can be helpful to have fans running if it can be done safely.
  • You are at risk for mold within the first 24-48 hours following a flood, so it is vital to remove the water as soon as possible and start remediation. Flooding poses a risk to drywall, support beams, and foundations, as well, and floodwater can also contain dangerous contaminants and sewage so it must be avoided.
  • Keep track of everything that was destroyed or damaged in the storm by documenting it through photos or videos along with putting together a list of broken items. You will need this list for insurance purposes.

If your business has experienced a flooding event, contact SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford as soon as possible. Here at SERVPRO, our focus is your safety and we are here to offer our professional help for water damage, fire damage, and mold remediation. We have years of experience in these areas and we are happy to help!

How to Manage Storm Damage Before Professional Help Arrives

9/18/2020 (Permalink)

Dallas home that suffered from Tornado

Especially in North Texas, the thunderstorms that come rolling across the city can cause severe damage, leaving homes and businesses upset and at risk in their wake. Coming home to an uprooted or fallen tree (or two) can inflict costly damage, particularly if you don’t know how to ensure it doesn’t get worse before it can be properly cleaned up. That’s why it’s important to know how to manage storm damage before professional help arrives.

Storm damage comes in all shapes and sizes—it doesn’t fit into one clear box, but there are a few general steps to take to manage storm damage immediately after it happens:

  1. Don’t Go Outside Until You Hear the Okay

Whenever severe storms, tornadoes, or other natural disasters have watches or warnings around you, take caution! Make sure you monitor your radio and your phone to hear the okay to leave your home when the threat of the storm has passed. Your safety and well-being always should come first.

  1. Document the Damage

Before doing anything else, take out your phone and snap pictures of all the damage. This is essential to make any insurance claims on property damage that you have sustained due to a storm. By having photos of the damage before any cleanup has occurred, you’re more likely to be able to claim the maximum amount of coverage from your insurance that you can in order to cover the costs.

  1. Cover Any Areas Where More Water Could Enter

If your roof or home has any holes or damage that allows water to continue to enter your home, make sure you cover them to the best of your ability with a tarp or something else to prevent more water from entering. Chances are, rain may still be pouring down after you sustain some storm damage, and you never know when it may start up again even if it has stopped.

  1. Remove Excess Water

Is your basement now a mini-ocean? Do your best to remove any excess water you can by the bucketful or with a shop-vac. However, don’t attempt to do this until you are certain that there is no electrical damage and you aren’t at risk of your power channeling itself through the standing water.

In all that you do after storm damage occurs, be sure to take caution and keep your safety in mind first and foremost. Once you have the time and signal to do so, call a local professional restoration company like SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford to get your place looking back to normal. You can reach us at 817-595-0004.

Sleet and snow accumulations are expected to be at about one inch with ice accumulations to be expected to be at about one tenth of an inch. Weekly Weather Update, Bedford, TX - 9/16

9/16/2019 (Permalink)

The United States was definitely lucky when it came to Hurricane Dorian, (though, our thoughts and our prayers are with the survivors in the Bahamas) but next few hurricanes are being watched closely including a storm that’s trying to form out in the Atlantic currently and Hurricane Humburto which is just off the coast currently, but is projected to make it’s way out to the Atlantic.

Hurricane season is just now ramping up with more to be expected developing into October and November. And we aren’t out of the clear either, just because we’re further inland. Our second storm season is just around the corner and it’s important to be prepared for severe weather as the temperatures start to cool down (thank goodness!).

We can expect to be in the mid to high 80s by the end of the week, and mid to high 80s by the middle of next week. Scattered thunderstorms and AM showers will be here by the end of the week.

If your Bedford home has been affected by recent storm weather give us a call today at 817.595.0004!

Second storm season is approaching!

Tropical Storm Dorian has been strengthening and is on track to become a tropical storm when it reaches the Windward Islands later tonight – and a hurricane watch has even been issued for a part of the islands. The future is uncertain, but it’s looking like it will be making its way through to Florida by the end of the week.

The good news is unless there’s a drastic change, it most likely won’t hit the state of Texas. But what about the future of weather here in the state? Luckily, it looks like today is the very last day for 100-degree weather (commence cheering). But we now have a chance of severe weather tonight, into Wednesday evening with the highest chance being 50% on Tuesday night. I don’t know about you, but I’m certainly not going to complain about the chance for some fall weather!

Our storm team has been in Wisconsin for a week now doing their best to help those who have been affected by the polar vortex. While they have been enjoying the cold weather since we don’t see too much of it here in Texas, they are still working hard. Temperatures well into the negatives had caused pipes to burst spilling water out into many people’s homes. Though the water had briefly melted, it froze again before we could finish extracting it, so our team had to wait for it to melt again before they could begin the extraction process.

Once the water was able to be extracted, our crew immediately got to work setting up equipment in the buildings and making sure everything would be dried properly. Through the process of cleaning up the affected areas, our teams also found plenty of mold growth that needed to be taken care of as well. There is a lot of work to done, so the crew will stay up north for a while longer to fix up as much damage as possible.

They are now heading to Chicago!

Our storm team packed up and headed to Wisconsin this week to help those affected by the polar vortex.

When the polar vortex struck the northern part of America this year, our franchise knew that the area would need help. As a certified Large Loss Response Team, we are able to handle bigger jobs than usual, so once the roads became safe to travel, some of our crew packed up and headed out to Wisconsin to help take care of some of the damage from the frigid blast in the Midwest.

Our team, lead by our fearless production manager, Dakota, prepared for the week leading up to the trip. They packed up the vehicles with everything they would need to handle the snowy situation up north. When disaster strikes, SERVPRO is always ready to step in. From hurricane relief, to snow storms, to wildfires, and more, our network of pros is always “Here to Help.”

What Caused the Polar Vortex?

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Heavy snow blanketed the US as extremely low temperatures swept in from the north.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, chances are you’ve heard about the major polar vortex that swept through the northern part of the US this week. With water freezing inside toilets, and the windchill dipping into Antarctic temperatures, it makes you wonder what could have possibly caused this storm… we have some answers right here!

The National Weather Service states that the polar vortex actually exists near the poles year-round, but it weakens in the summer and strengthens in the winter. Usually the counter-clockwise motion of the vortex keeps the cold air relatively contained near the poles, but during the winter, the vortex may expand or become unstable which sends arctic blasts shooting southward.

While it may be tempting to play in the snow, it is critical for you to stay warm and keep yourself safe. Temperatures this low can easily become lethal after only a few minutes. Stay inside, stay hydrated, and be sure to layer up to keep yourself as warm as possible.

The Difference Between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

North Texas lies in the southern part of an area known as Tornado Alley. Here, the conditions are just right to spawn huge storms and funnel clouds, so those of us who live here are no stranger to big storms and high winds. You may turn on the TV during a particularly bad storm and hear that there is a tornado warning or a tornado watch, but what is the difference between the two?

A tornado watch means that the conditions are right to form a twister in your area. If you are in a place that is under a tornado watch be prepared to quickly move to cover, and keep an eye on the emergency broadcasts in your area. Watches will typically occur over a broader area than warnings; they may even span multiple counties during particularly large storms.

A tornado warning means that a funnel has been spotted! It may have been picked up on a weather radar, or someone may have seen it themselves. Either way, you should immediately seek cover! Move away from windows, and get to low ground (The first floor of your house, or a basement if available). If you live in a mobile home, or if you are outdoors when the watch comes in, find a sturdy building and get inside. If you are unable to do that, find low ground and lie face down, protecting your head with your hands.

Tornadoes are disastrous, and they leave a mess in their wake. If your property suffers from storm damage, call SERVPRO® of Hurst-Euless-Bedford to make it “Like it never even happened.” 817.595.0004.

How to Protect Your Property from Stormwater

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

Stormwater runoff is rain that has not been soaked into the ground, so it flows over the ground until it finds somewhere to go. Ideally, the water would find a stream or river to flow into, but this is not always the case. Sometimes the water will flow straight into your house. Water damage is never fun, and trying to get rid of water as well as clean up the rest of the mess a storm has left behind can be a real hassle. The best way to handle stormwater runoff is to make sure it doesn’t happen to begin with. If you are up for a bit of landscaping, you can optimize your yard to keep stormwater away from your building.

  • Swales: Simply put, a swale is just a type of trench meant to carry water and redirect it away from something important. If you decide to install swales in your yard, make sure they are redirecting somewhere that the water will not cause damage such as a stream or pond.
  • Rain Gardens: These gardens are designed with plants that are able to take up excess water to keep it from flowing freely. They also help filter the water so that the water that does reach ponds and rivers tends to be cleaner than water that has just flowed over driveways and roads.
  • Draining Driveways: Driveways are one of the largest contributors to stormwater runoff. Installing drainage areas on the sides of the pavement or using gravel can help minimize the amount of water that becomes runoff.

Sometimes there is so much runoff that no matter what you do, your house may suffer from some water damage. If that is the case, call us at 817.595.0004 to see how we can help return your home to normal!

The 2018 Hurricane Season

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricane season in the Atlantic brings whipping winds, driving rains, floods, and power outages; in fact, NASA has named them the most violent storms on earth. “Hurricane Season” is the time of year when conditions become perfect for these swirling storms to form more easily. This season usually lasts from early June to around November. Shifts in pressure and temperature lead some pretty big storms to form, but though some of them may disappear before reaching land, some storms grow to be massive and wreak havoc along the east coast of the US. These tropical monsters are rated in categories from 1-5 with 5 being the biggest, baddest storms. Hurricane Irma in 2017 was a category 5 storm.

These storms are scary to think about, and 2018 has already seen a few storms this summer, but you don’t need to worry too much. The national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released a statement saying that the 2018 hurricane season is expected to have below normal activity. They are estimating between 9 and 13 named storms with 4 to 7 of those storms becoming hurricanes, and only 2 of the hurricanes to be classified as major storms. A below average season would be a welcome respite from the 2017 season which handed us Hurricanes Harvey and Irma who both did major damage to the United States and left hundreds of communities in shambles.

Even with a more positive outlook for this year’s hurricane season, it never hurts to be prepared! If you live in a coastal area, or an area with a history of big storms, keep an eye on the local news to make sure that there are no storms forming that could affect you. Be able to determine whether it is safe for you to hunker down, and have enough supplies to do so. Sometimes, you will need to evacuate, so plan your evacuation route ahead of time - just in case.

Winter Storm Advisory for North Texas

2/6/2018 (Permalink)

Winter Storm Liam

Winter weather advisories for the threat of snow, freezing rain and sleet have also been issued from North Texas and Eastern Oklahoma into the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic. At this time, winter weather advisories are not in effect for the downtown neighborhoods of Dallas-Fort Worth, but are in effect for the northern suburbs.

Winter Storm Preparedness: Prevent Frozen Water Pipes

Winter storms don’t happen very often in Dallas; however, cold weather does come to town. That being said,

The National Severe Storms Laboratory categories a winter storm as having snow, sleet, or freezing rain. In North Texas we can see any of this type of precipitation. When the temperature is below freezing, and precipitation is in the forecast, SERVPRO of Hurst, Euless, Bedford knows what types of calls to expect: water damages.

How Water Pipes Freeze and Break

A water damage during a winter storm happens when your pipes freeze. When water freezes, it expands and creates pressure inside the pipe, which can cause it to break.  The pipes that are most likely to freeze are those outside the home that are exposed.  Other vulnerable pipes are those indoors that don’t have access to heat, like those under your kitchen cabinets or in the garage.

Indoor Frozen Pipe Prevention

Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses. Detaching the hose allows water to drain from the pipe. Otherwise, a single hard, overnight freeze can burst either the faucet or the pipe it's connected to.

Insulate pipes or faucets in unheated areas. If you have pipes in an unheated garage or cold crawl space under the house, wrap the water pipes before temperatures plummet. Hardware or building supply stores will have good pipe wrapping materials available.

Allow steady water flow. In some places you're advised to leave a steady drip or pencil-lead-thin stream of water flowing from a bathroom faucet during the worst of a cold spell.
