Do Your Employees Know What To Do In Case of An Emergency?

2/5/2020 (Permalink)

Back when I worked retail, I worked for a store that had only one bathroom. Now, this was a fairly popular store, despite ahem – recent bankruptcy (that’s another story for another time) and it was a part of a strip center. When I became manager, I put into a place that it was an employee only bathroom, due to it being so far in our back room. The only exception, being children, because obviously little ones can’t hold it for very long! They just had to be accompanied by an adult.

Now, my sweet, sweet coworker, let a child go back without a parent, and – I think you can see where this is going. We had a diaper shoved into our toilet that lead to a pipe that burst. Product was lost, time was lost, and ultimately, we had to close the store while we waited for it to be fixed. Thinking back, we really had no idea where our water shut of valve was, and that would have been really handy to know that information.

When asked what to do in the situation, most of us said “I don’t know, call corporate.” So, do your employees know what to do in the event of an emergency other than “I don’t know, call corporate?” Make sure they do with an ERP, or Emergency Ready Profile. An ERP is a super handy guide that details out your building, like when the last asbestos test was, where your water shut off is, and more. We will even create a floor plan so in the case of an emergency, we can get set up quickly and efficiently and make sure your business gets back to business.
