Fortunately, there are many experienced, reliable companies in Texas that can provide high-quality fire restoration services. Let’s take a look at how to find the right one for your needs.

Research Companies Online

The best place to start is by researching different companies online. Keep an eye out for any reviews from past customers, since these can give you an idea of the quality of service each company provides. Make sure to check out their website as well – most reputable companies will have detailed information about the services they offer and any certifications they have earned. This can be a great way to get an idea of which companies are the most experienced and qualified before you start making calls or sending emails.

Ask Around Your Network

It’s also a good idea to talk with people in your network who may have had experiences with different fire restoration companies in the area. Ask them what their experience was like – were they satisfied with the quality of work? Did it take longer than expected? What did they think about working with the company overall? It’s always better to hear first-hand accounts from someone you trust than relying solely on online reviews or website information.

Get Multiple Estimates

Once you’ve narrowed down your options, contact multiple companies for estimates on the job you need done. Make sure each company has all the details so that their estimates are accurate – this includes measurements, materials needed, estimated timeline, etc. Then compare prices across all estimates before making your final decision – remember, it's not just about cost; make sure you're also taking quality into account!

Fires are devastating events that require quick action from experienced professionals in order to minimize damage and restore homes safely and quickly. Thankfully, there are many reliable fire restoration companies in Texas that can help homeowners get back on their feet after such a disaster occurs. Do your research online and ask around your network for recommendations before getting multiple estimates and making your final decision! With these steps, you'll be able to find a reliable company that meets both your needs and budget requirements for restoring your home after a fire event!

What to know about property restoration in Texas after a fire

1/25/2023 (Permalink)

House fire in the night House fire in the night

Experiencing a fire in your home can be an incredibly traumatic experience, but with the right help, you can restore your property to its pre-fire condition. Knowing what to expect when it comes to the restoration process is key to ensuring that your property is returned to its original state as quickly and efficiently as possible. Here’s what you need to know about property restoration in Texas after a fire.

The Right Team for the Job

In order to ensure that your home is properly restored after a fire, it’s important to hire the right team for the job. Look for a company that has experience dealing with fires of similar magnitude and scope as yours. This way, you can feel confident knowing that they are capable of handling any challenges that may arise during the restoration process. Additionally, make sure that they use only high-quality materials and follow all safety protocols.

As a pro tip, try partnering with a property restoration company in Texas that has experience dealing with insurance companies. This can go a long way in helping you maximize your dollars and reduce the amount of stress you’re facing.

The Cleanup Process

Once you have hired the right team, they will begin by assessing the damage done to your property. This includes everything from checking smoke damage on walls and ceilings to examining water damage caused by putting out the fire. After this initial assessment, they will begin cleaning up debris left behind by the fire, such as ash and charred wood or furniture. They will also take steps to prevent further damage from occurring due to water or smoke exposure. Finally, they will move on to restoring any items damaged by the fire itself.

Restoration Techniques

Depending on how extensive the damage is, there are several different techniques used for restoring items back to their pre-fire state. For instance, if there is significant structural damage caused by smoke or heat exposure, then builders may need to be brought in for repairs or reconstruction work. For less severe damages, like water stains or charring on walls or furniture surfaces, chemical treatments may be used instead of more intrusive measures like sanding or grinding down these surfaces. In some cases where only minor cosmetic changes are needed after cleaning off dust and dirt residue left behind by the fire, painting may be enough for full restoration of certain areas of your home or office building.

Make sure you receive a full breakdown of all your options before any work is started. This way, you can fully understand what is and is not going to happen with your property and what the final result will look like.

No matter how extensive the damage caused by a fire is at your property in Texas, having an understanding of what needs to be done during property restoration can help give you peace of mind during this difficult time. Making sure you hire experienced professionals who understand how different materials respond after being exposed to heat and smoke can ensure that your home is restored back exactly as it was before—and maybe even better! With some patience and dedication from both you and those working on restoring your property, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t get back into living life as normal soon enough!

How to avoid seasonal hazards during the cold seasons

12/20/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Hurst-Euless-Bedford explains ways to protect yourself during the cold seasons.

Fall and winter are exciting seasons in many parts of the United States. However, they pose many seasonal hazards and restoration needs and come with their fair share of risks.

The team at SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford, a full-service water and fire damage restoration company in Hurst, TX, has highlighted 3 seasonal hazards and restoration tips you can follow to stay safe.

1. Fire hazard

Fire hazard is one of the most common seasonal hazards in fall and winter. With the temperature starting to drop, people often go back to using their heating equipment. With the heaters and furnaces not being used for so long, turning them on without having them serviced first can lead to a significant fire hazard.

In addition to dormant heating systems, another source of fire hazards during fall and winter is the misuse of candles. With the arrival of fall, it’s common for people to get their candles out to get cozier. However, candles are one of the most typical causes of house fires.

Tips for preventing fire hazards

Service your heating system

Before using any heating system that has not been used for months, it is vital to bring in an expert to inspect and service it. Servicing your heaters before loading them will help you avoid fire hazards and prolong your device's lifespan.

Don’t leave candles unattended

When using a candle, you should blow it out the moment you no longer need it or if you’ll be away from it for more than a couple of minutes. A lighted candle should never be left unattended.

In addition, burning candles should be put in a place where they’ll be out of reach of kids and pets, and they should be placed far from anything that might catch fire.

2. Flooding

Another seasonal hazard during the fall season is flooding. Flooding sometimes occurs because people ignore storm drains during fall and just concentrate on removing the falling leaves in their yards. This practice is a mistake that can prove costly if it rains.

If the leaf debris isn't removed from drains, the fallen leaves can clog the drains and block water from passing through.

How to prevent flooding in the fall

You need to ensure that you remove leaf debris from your drains. With leaves constantly falling, you need to check your gutters frequently. A drain free of debris could be the difference between enjoying the season and dealing with flooding.

3. Fog

Fog can be dangerous for drivers if not adequately managed because it can cause visibility reduction. It can be as bad as your line of sight is reduced to less than a quarter of a mile.

How to protect yourself on a foggy day

Because of how bad the visibility reduction caused by fog can get, it’s important to be far more careful when driving on a foggy morning. Always use your fog lights or low beams to protect yourself and other road users.

If faced with a fire incident, professionals recommend taking the following steps to minimize the impact of the damage on your property:

#1 Prioritize Safety

Dealing with fire, no matter how small or big can be devastating. The thought of losing some of your precious belongings can be excruciatingly painful. But there is a magnitude of loss that you cannot recover if you are alive.

Immediately you notice the fire in your home, call the first responder while keeping a distance from the raging fire. Do not attempt to plug or unplug electrical items during that time.

Also, do not attempt to put off the light yourself, especially when doing so exposes you to greater danger. Instead, call the fire department and ensure you do not enter until your fire marshal informs you it is safe.

#2 Ventilate appropriately

Smoke is often trapped in the house even after the fire has been extinguished. Once you are cleared to re-enter your home, ensure you open all the doors, windows, skylights, and more. Doing this helps to get as much of the smoke and other potentially hazardous debris particles trapped in the air released.

#3 Document the damage

Recovering from fire damage can be financially draining. The good news is your homeowner's insurance may cover most, if not all, of the costs needed to repair or replace the damaged property. To back up your claim, you need to take photos of the damage, affected items, and other pieces of evidence showing that the damage was caused by an event or a string of events covered in your homeowner's insurance policy.

#4 Protect unaffected items

It is common to have some items left undamaged after a disaster such as fire damage. The first thing you want to do after ventilating your home is to prevent particles from damaging those items during cleanup. You can move them away from the affected area to keep them safe.

For example, fire restoration specialists advise covering pieces of clean and unaffected furniture with plastic. This helps preserve their integrity and ensure they remain in good condition during and after the fire cleanup and restoration process.

#5 Call fire damage restoration professionals

No matter how small or minor a fire accident may appear, it is safer to call a professional fire damage restoration professional to fully assess the damage and identify potential areas of concern. A professional can restore your property by removing smoke and soot that have gathered around the home and in the air to protect you and your family from inhaling them.

SERVPRO: Maintenance tips for smoke alarms

6/17/2022 (Permalink)

Blog summary: The SERVPRO blog lists the maintenance tips that will ensure that smoke alarms are functional, especially when the need arises.

Maintenance tips for smoke alarms

Fires are life-changing events that can disrupt lives and cause huge economic losses. According to The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), 60% of home fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms. However, a smoke alarm is useful only when it functions well. SERVPRO, a fire damage restoration company, shares some simple maintenance tips to keep smoke alarms functioning at their optimum level.

1. Test the smoke alarm after installation

After the installation is complete, homeowners must test the detectors and demonstrate them to the family members. Identifying the sound of the alarm, discussing the steps to follow in case of an evacuation, and determining the meeting points would be the right steps. A fire drill practice is a great way to ensure the smoke alarm is followed by a methodical evacuation. Ideally, a smoke detector must be tested once every month to ensure its responsiveness.

2. Perform power tests monthly

Manually inspecting the smoke alarm at least once per month is recommended. Push the test button to confirm that the sensor is working and the alarm sound is audible and at an optimal level. Check all the smoke alarms in the house.

3. Replace batteries annually

Schedule a yearly battery replacement to ensure that the batteries don’t die out when the smoke alarm is needed. Refer to the manufacturer’s guide to replace the batteries properly. Do not wait for the battery to die out before replacement.

4. Clean the detectors annually

A dirty smoke detector can raise false alarms. A light dusting of the smoke alarm with a dry/damp cloth is good enough to remove dust and pollutants from the outside. But an annual deep cleaning is also necessary to ensure the alarm works well. For deep cleaning, the detector can be taken off the wall, the power source removed, and the external casing taken off. A dry cloth, air compressor, or vacuum hose must be used to clean the dust, and thereafter the detector can be reassembled. No liquids or cleaners should be used lest they ruin the device.

5. Install the detectors in the right places

Although smoke detectors should be installed across the house in bedrooms, kitchens, and enclosed areas, it is important to consider their ability to function in certain conditions. For instance, a smoke detector near cooking appliances can cause false alarms. It should be placed at least 10 feet from any heat and fire sources but too close to a window, duct, or door can decrease their effectiveness. Therefore, the right location of a smoke detector is also a big factor in deciding its effectiveness.

6. Investigate false alarms

In case of frequent false alarms, homeowners must determine the causes. Is it due to a wrong location such as being too close to a gas stove? Have the batteries died out? Perhaps it needs a little cleaning? If these are not the causes, maybe the smoke alarm needs to be replaced.

SERVPRO recommends fire safety tips that homeowners can follow for common electrical appliances

4/29/2022 (Permalink)

Blog summary: The SERVPRO blog dives into fire safety tips that homeowners can follow to prevent home appliances from malfunctioning and causing fires.

Fire safety tips for 7 home appliances

According to the NFPA, electrical failures or malfunctions were the second leading cause of electrical home fires in 2015–2019 accounting for 13% of home structure fires. As homes become more comfortable with advanced technology and appliances, the risk of electrical fire also increases. SERVPRO, a fire damage restoration company in Hurst-Euless-Bedford, shares some important tips to prevent electrical fires in homes due to malfunctioning appliances.

All electrical appliances must be regularly maintained and inspected, placed in an appropriate location, powered adequately, and used carefully. Here are some safety tips for 7 common appliances:

  1. Washing Machine
  • Connect and ground the washing machine properly.
  • Read and follow the manufacturer’s operating instruction manual.
  • Do not overload the washing machine.
  • Take care of the plastic components on the interior of the door that release the detergent. This helps prevent the water from leaking over the machine’s internal wires, which can cause a fire.
  • Dry the clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, such as gasoline or paint thinner, before loading them into the machine.

  1. Clothes Dryer
  • Ground the dryer and clear the vicinity of combustible substances.
  • Use a lint filter regularly and clean the lint from the screen and around the drum before or after each use. Clean the lint from the vent pipe once a year. Clothes taking too long to dry is an indication that vent cleaning is needed.
  • Vent the dryers outside using rigid or semi-rigid metal venting materials.
  • Opt for metal vent pipes to ensure proper airflow.
  • Hire professionals to inspect gas dryers regularly.
  1. Electric or Gas Ranges
  • Clean all the grease and flammable residues from the burner, stovetop, or oven.
  • Keep all combustible items away from ovens.
  • Never leave the cooking range unattended. Switch it off when leaving the kitchen.
  • Protect oneself by rolling up sleeves, tying long hair, and wearing non-slip footwear when cooking.
  • In case of a smell of gas inside the oven or near it, open a window and call a professional immediately.
  • Safely connect the oven and the hood.
  • Install safety devices such as stove safety guards, stove knob stops, and stove locking straps.
  • Use a powder fire extinguisher, baking soda, salt, or wet rags to douse a grease fire. Water can make the fire worse and uncontrollable.
  1. Refrigerator
  • The fridge must be powered as safely and efficiently as possible.
  • Inspect the power cord and electrical outlet for wear and tear.
  • Clean the back of the fridge or freezer regularly to avoid the accumulation of dirt at the back of the appliance.

  1. Dishwasher
  • Never leave the dishwasher switched on and unattended.
  • Use a grounded wall socket to power the dishwasher.
  • Inspect the plastic components that release the detergent on the interior of the door for any damage.
  1. Electric Heater
  • Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from flammable materials like paper, drapes, or carpet.
  • Place heaters on a stable, horizontal surface.
  • Keep heaters away from water and wet areas.
  • An overheated cord, plug, and wall outlet of a heater must be unplugged immediately and inspected by a professional.
  • Don’t leave a heater unattended, especially with kids and pets as they may knock it down or get accidentally burnt.
  1. Microwave Oven
  • Never use aluminum foil or metal in a microwave oven, as they can cause fire.
  • Avoid using microwaves for drying or sterilizing baby bottles, clothes, or blankets.
  • Clean the food debris, grease, or stains regularly from the microwave and its outer edge.

To ensure electrical fire safety, homeowners can register newly bought appliances on the manufacturer’s website thereby ensuring regular safety information and updates about the household appliance. These safety tips can help prevent appliance fires and protect the house and its inhabitants. For fire restoration services, homeowners can call the SERVPRO team to restore the house to its original glory.

Why Fire Drills Can Save Lives in Commercial Spaces

2/28/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: Bedford’s premier water damage restoration and fire damage restoration company, SERVPRO, examines why all workplaces should incorporate fire drills as fire safety measures.

Why Do Businesses Need Fire Drills at Work?

Preparation drives an effective response to workplace fires. A workplace that practices fire drills leads to more calm, quick, and safe employees in an unforeseen emergency.

Bedford, TX’s fire damage restoration company and commercial cleaning service SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford has created a list of reasons why fire drills are vital to every workplace, along with tips to perform them smoothly.

People tend to scramble during emergencies, as emotions run high and a present threat becomes imminent. Fire drills allow staff to practice orderly evacuation in a simulated situation so that everyone knows how to safely exit the building – even while everyone is moving at once.

The more familiar staff becomes with the drill procedure, the greater chance everyone leaves the building safely. Engaging in frequent fire drills allows everyone to calmly review the steps, helping alleviate some panic during an actual fire. Any hiccups observed during the exercise can be nipped in the bud and practiced over the subsequent drills.

Frequency of Drills

A business needs to conduct fire drills once per year at minimum. Fire restoration companies and firefighters alike recommend a biannual fire drill, so the concept does not seem foreign, and the procedure sticks in everyone’s mind. Because of potential ramifications, all employers must record each exercise.

Inform Your Staff Before the Drill

No law states fire drills have to be surprises, and informing staff beforehand makes everyone more likely to attend.

Some fire damage restoration professionals attest that surprising staff with a drill leads to a more authentic experience. The best way to gauge which option to use is by asking staff and getting their takes on the situation.

What to Do During a Drill

To get the most out of the drill, employers should do the following:

  •       Time the exercise: Record the time it takes for everyone to leave the building and group at the assembly points. This lets you know if the procedure takes too long, allowing you to find new ways to quicken the process.
  •       Observe: Because of the infrequent nature of fire drills, employers should use each as an opportunity to gauge the process’ effectiveness.
  •       Keep Records: List when exercises happen and all the people involved in each drill. Fire Safety Inspectors may drop in on you at any time, and you’ll want to be prepared.

In the Event of an Actual Fire

Even if everyone is prepared, when a fire happens, damage still occurs. Automatic sprinklers likely kicked in, and the fire department may have hosed the whole building down. In these instances, building owners need a commercial fire and water damage restoration service that specializes in mold removal and water cleanup.

When searching among water restoration companies, start with SERVPRO. SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford has helped employers with commercial water damage for years and ranks among the top mold remediation companies. When you need emergency water restoration, don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO.

Bedford, TX’s, Premier Fire Damage Restoration Company: SERVPRO

SERVPRO: What are the usual suspects of a fire in college campuses and what fire safety tips can be followed?

1/27/2022 (Permalink)

Blog summary: The SERVPRO blog gives insight into the common reasons behind college fires and how students can prevent such events by following some fire safety tips.

Fire safety tips for college campuses

College campuses are like another home for students and it becomes their responsibility to make sure their home is safe from all dangers, especially fire. SERVPRO, a fire damage restoration company, shares some facts about campus fires and fire safety tips that the college staff and students must follow.

Some facts about campus fires

  • 94 percent of fatal campus fires occur off-campus.
  • 29 percent of the fatal campus fires were caused by smoking.
  • 76 percent of fatal campus fires were influenced by alcohol.
  • In 58 percent of the fatal campus fires, smoke alarms were either missing or tampered with.
  • 85 fatal campus fires did not have any fire sprinklers installed on the campus.
  • 70 percent of fatal campus fires occurred on the weekend.
  • 73 percent of the fatal fires occurred between midnight and 6 am.
  • 13 percent of the fatal fires occur in the campus housing in the month of April.

Fire safety tips for students at a college campus

  1. Know all evacuation routes: Attend all fire drills and learn about all the evacuation procedures and possible evacuation routes. Review and become familiar with evacuation routes regularly.
  1. Locate the closest fire alarm: In case a student notices a fire, it is crucial to pull the fire alarm at the earliest. Therefore all students should know where the closest fire alarm is. Students should be able to hear the fire alarm from their dorms. If not, they must inform the dorm authorities.
  1. Smoke detector education: A functional smoke detector is key in alerting everyone of a fire and starting the evacuation process. Every dorm room and the living area must have a smoke alarm. These alarms must be inspected regularly to ensure optimum functioning. Students must refrain from disabling the alarm or removing its batteries. If the smoke alarm is disabled due to some problem, students must contact their college’s safety or maintenance department promptly.
  1. Keep fire exit doors clear: Since the space in most college dorms and apartments is limited, students should ensure they never block entrances/exits with bikes, boxes, or furniture. During an emergency, a blocked exit can delay the escape time and prove fatal.
  1. Learn to use a fire extinguisher: Ideally, students should focus on evacuating the building when a smoke/fire alarm is sounded. However, there may be situations where students may need to use the fire extinguisher. Understanding the instructions during the fire is unfruitful, so students must learn how to use a fire extinguisher in case of an emergency.
  1. Don’t play pranks: Fires are a matter of life and death. Students must refrain from playing a practical joke such as pulling a fire alarm as a joke. When a real fire happens, the students may not take the alarm seriously.

Measures to take before, during, and after a fire occurs

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

Blog summary: The SERVPRO blog talks about the things homeowners can do to prepare for fire events and the steps they can take during and after the fire has subsided.

Fire damage disaster preparation

As per the National Fire Protection Association, in 2020, local fire departments responded to an estimated 1.4 million fires in the United States. Property damage was estimated at $21.9 billion. Sometimes, fires events such as wildfires are inevitable but homeowners can be prepared to deal with the disaster and protect their loved ones. SERVPRO shares some important precautions that homeowners can follow before, during, and after a fire damage disaster occurs.

Before the fire

Preparation is the first line of defense against a fire event. Here are some of the steps that homeowners can take to ensure they are ready if a fire does occur:

  1. Prepare a disaster relief kit

A “go-to bag” or a disaster relief kit that contains essentials such as extra cash, clothing, footwear, health emergency information, medications, and phone chargers can be prepared in advance for emergencies. Ensure it is a waterproof bag that contains items that are best suited to the family members' needs. Homeowners can look online for more ideas on how to pack a disaster kit.

  1. Family preparation

An evacuation plan is effective when every family member knows where to go and how to get there. For such emergencies, a family meeting place must be assigned far from smoke and fire but close enough for everyone to reach easily and swiftly. Two escape routes must be planned for every room in case of a fire block. These escape routes can be drawn out on a detailed floor plan of the house to make it easy to understand and recall. Everyone’s phone number must be saved on everyone else’s phone for easy communication. Families can conduct regular fire drills to ensure that everyone knows the plan of action when the need for evacuation emerges for real.

  1. Reliable transport

When a fire affects an entire community or municipality, an escape vehicle must be ready and available. Ensure that the tank is at least half full and the car is serviced and in good condition. Some important items can be stashed in the getaway car in case of emergencies.

  1. Active home fire protection

Smoke detectors can alert the family about a fire in the house and enable timely action. Fire extinguishers are invaluable if the fire is small and contained. Homeowners must invest in one and learn to use it correctly. This equipment must also be inspected and maintained regularly to ensure it is functioning smoothly.

During the fire evacuation

When a fire occurs, it can be chaotic and frightening. Being prepared enables the best decisions that ensure everyone’s safety.

1. Communications

During a wildfire, power lines and phones may not work. Family members should try their best to stay in touch with each other at all times. It is important to stay updated on the instructions and safest course of action from officials such as firefighters and police. Listening to emergency updates on news radio and weather stations is helpful when wildfires are affecting more than just one area. Communication is key to receiving and giving the right information so residents should try their best to keep all possible channels open.

  1. Pets

Pets should be well-trained so they can be managed easily during an emergency. Pets should be in a place where they can be easily retrieved and should be able to respond to the owner when called.

  1. Health and safety

Family members should check each other for any injuries once out of the fire zone. Exposure to smoke can cause health effects.

Post evacuation

It is unsafe to return to homes until the authorities have deemed the area and the house structure as safe. Fire damage to the house may require intensive restoration and rebuilding before the house becomes habitable.

A fire can be an overwhelming experience but with good preparation and presence of mind, homeowners can protect themselves and their families during and after the disaster. What are the important commercial fire safety measures?

10/20/2021 (Permalink)

Blog summary: The SERVPRO article gives insight into the fire safety equipment and processes commercial buildings must follow to prevent fire incidents.

Commercial fire safety tips

Commercial fire safety is a combination of fire safety equipment and policies. Commercial buildings must follow some fire safety precautions to ensure the well-being of the employees and customers. Needless to say, fire prevention also protects the equipment, merchandise, raw material, documents, and the building itself. SERVPRO shares some commercial fire safety measures below.

  1. Fire alarms

Fire alarms are the most critical elements of a commercial building fire system. The sound of a fire alarm alerts everyone in the building of potential danger and announces the need for evacuation. A regular inspection and maintenance of the fire alarm can keep the system in prime condition. Fire drills help familiarize employees with the fire safety and evacuation procedures. Commercial building owners must conform to their local, state, and federal requirements for fire alarm systems to avoid any regulation penalties.

  1. Emergency lights, exit signs, and evacuation routes

A fire causes panic and chaos. Smoke from the fire and the loss of electrical power can disorient the people caught in the fire. Emergency lights and exit signs switch on when power is lost and can help people navigate through the building by lighting up the evacuation route. These lights and signs should be tested regularly to ensure proper functioning. A monthly 30-minute minimum function test and an annual 90-minute function test should also be conducted and documented.

Moreover, the evacuation route must be unobstructed. Fire doors, overhead doors, hallways, pathways, stairways, windows, and outdoor areas such as fire hydrant paths must be checked daily for any obstructive objects.

  1. Fire extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are mandatory in a commercial setting according to most fire codes. They are an effective means of extinguishing a small fire before it becomes an out-of-control blaze that makes evacuation impossible. Generally, fire extinguishers must be within reach and mounted on walls within 75 feet from any point. Extinguishers should also be mounted near exits to ensure easy access and avoid the need to go further into a burning building. Employees must be trained in how to operate a fire extinguisher. Additionally, regular maintenance and inspection of fire extinguishers ensure proper functioning when an emergency arrives.

  1. Fire sprinkler/standpipe systems

A sprinkler system reacts to heat and turns on a water sprinkler to suppress or extinguish larger fires. Standpipe systems are a series of pipes that connect a water supply to hose connections, basically an extension of the fire hydrant system. Sprinkler and standpipe systems need to be inspected and maintained by a licensed inspector to ensure smooth functioning. The control valves, system’s main drain, backflow device, and sprinkler pipes must be carefully tested regularly.

  1. Daily fire prevention activities

Commercial spaces have plenty of areas that can become fire hazards. The following steps can minimize these hazards:

  • Stow the trash/waste in trash/recycling bins. Avoid piling up in any area, especially doorways.
  • Extension cords should be industrial grade and grounded.
  • All power strips must be UL listed with built-in circuit breakers.
  • Cigarette butts and containers should be discarded far from the building, shrubbery, and flammable materials.
  • Combustible materials/liquids must be stored securely in approved containers as per NFPA/OSHA regulations.
  • Electrical appliances must be GFCI protected.
  • No heat-producing equipment should be left on without supervision.
  • Fire sprinkler piping or sprinkler heads shoul\d be clear of any obstructions or hangings.
  • Fire pump rooms/riser rooms should only store fire protection equipment.
  • All supplies/stock/merchandise must be kept at least 3 ft away from heating units and ductwork.
  • Fire extinguishers should be inspected and maintained. They should be fully charged, undamaged, and accessible.
  1. Inspections & maintenance for fire protection systems

Preventative fire protection system inspections are the best deterrent against a dysfunctional system. The following components of the system must be regularly scheduled for inspection:

  • Fire sprinkler systems
  • Backflow preventer assemblies
  • Fire suppression systems
  • Kitchen hood suppression systems
  • Fire alarms
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Alarms, monitors, detectors

Inspections ensure any faults are detected and amended in time, and the system works when there is an emergency.

  1. Staff training

Fire prevention equipment and procedures are pointless without trained staff to uphold the protocol and implement the processes. Every commercial establishment must educate its staff members on the causes of fire, train them to use fire extinguishers, and imbibe in them the daily fire-safety prevention routine. Holding annual fire safety training sessions is very helpful. Moreover, employees must be encouraged to be vigilant and report any potential fire hazards right away.

This training will ensure that employees can manage to prevent fires and evacuate calmly and safely in the event of a fire.

SERVPRO: Fire sprinkler myths busted

9/23/2021 (Permalink)

Blog summary: The SERVPRO article dives into and busts the myths that prevent homeowners from installing fire sprinklers as a fire safety measure.

Fire sprinkler myths busted

Fire sprinklers are one of the most effective means of controlling a fire and preventing an uncontrollable blaze. However, several myths discourage homeowners from installing sprinkler systems. SERVPRO busts these myths below.

Statistics from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) show that the civilian death rate was 81 percent lower in homes with sprinklers; average firefighter injury rate was nearly 80 percent lower when fire sprinklers were present and; fires were contained in the room of origin 97 percent of the time when sprinklers were present.

Myth #1

A smoke alarm is enough

The function of smoke alarms is to alert the occupants of the fire danger and inform emergency services of the fire incident. However, an alarm does not help douse a fire. The myth about installing either a smoke alarm or a fire sprinkler system is baseless because the purpose of both gadgets is very different.

A sprinkler is the first line of defense against fire. It reduces the heat, flames, and smoke and allows the occupants to get out of the building safely. A fire incident with no sprinkler systems can quickly spiral out of control by the time emergency help arises.

Myth #2

Every sprinkler will turn on when there is a fire

Sprinklers are designed to detect the heat of a fire and activate only in the affected areas. This is a myth that when a fire incident occurs all sprinklers will go off and cause a serious amount of flooding in the building. When a small fire starts only one or two sprinklers are triggered. Despite popular belief, smoke, cooking vapors, or a little steam does not trigger a fire sprinkler.

Myth #3

Water damage from the sprinklers is as bad as the fire damage they prevent

Firstly, water damage from an activated sprinkler is not the main concern, the safety of the occupants is. The fire sprinklers allow the occupants to escape to safety before the emergency services arrive. Secondly, when a fire goes out of control, the water used by the fire department is eight-and-a-half times more than the water dispersed by a sprinkler system. A sprinkler system can prevent the fire from getting out of control in much less water. The water damage caused by a fire hose can extend to expensive possessions, upholstery, and even the structural integrity of the property.

Myth #4

Sprinklers will freeze in winters and become useless

Homeowners in cold regions struggle with frozen pipes and therefore assume that sprinkler systems would also freeze. However, a properly installed sprinkler system will continue to function effectively irrespective of the weather. This worry is completely unfounded. Sprinkler systems provide a lot of fire safety in all weathers across the world.

Myth #5

Sprinklers are prone to leaking and can activate accidentally

The odds of a manufacturing defect leading to an accidental sprinkler discharge are very low: 1 in 16 million. A sprinkler would leak without a fire only when it has not been maintained well or has a faulty part. The worry that fire sprinklers will regularly leak or turn on without warning is a myth. A smoke alarm turns on when they detect smoke, whereas a sprinkler turns on when it detects high temperatures. Therefore, a slice of bread in the toaster may activate a smoke alarm but it won't set off sprinklers.

Myth #6

Sprinklers are required in older buildings only

Modern constructions do take fire safety into account whereas older buildings have no such arrangements. However, even a new construction is not fire-resistant and needs fire sprinklers. Fires are more common in older buildings due to outdated electrical wiring but every building irrespective of its age needs to install fire safety gadgets such as fire sprinklers for adequate protection.

SERVPRO: What Should Homeowners Do Once the Fire Has Been Extinguished?

7/14/2021 (Permalink)

Blog summary: The article by SERVPRO shares a post-fire checklist that homeowners can refer to.

Post-fire checklist

There are multiple reasons a fire may occur at a home. Once the fire is extinguished, there are hundreds of things that need to be taken care of besides the fire damage restoration of the home itself. SERVPRO understands how daunting a challenge this can be, and shares a simple post-fire checklist that homeowners can use to decide their next steps.

1. Contact family

A fire is a traumatic event that can overwhelm. It is a time when everyone needs support from family and friends. Letting family and friends know about the incident is important to begin the process of rehabilitation and restoration.

Also, inform the property owners immediately so they can take steps regarding their property and recovery.

2. Call insurance company

Notify the insurance agent to begin the claim process immediately. Until the fire is reported to the insurance company, repairs cannot begin. And the longer the repairs are delayed the worse the damage can become. Once the process begins, an insurance agent can handle property emergencies, lodging, and living expenses.

Contact the personal bank, mortgage lender, auto insurance agent (in case of vehicle damage), and utility company. Notification of the fire damage event to these entities may provide relief from late fees on payments while the restoration work takes place.

Fire damage restoration companies like SERVPRO work with insurance companies by providing repair estimates and helping with claims. Make sure to get a copy of the fire report which is helpful in providing more information for the insurance agency.

3. Get the property assessed

An insurance adjuster is likely to visit to evaluate the fire damage to the house. This evaluation will determine if the home can be saved, or if it must be demolished and rebuilt.

In case the house can be saved, a professional fire damage and water damage restoration company like SERVPRO can come to the rescue. Besides the direct damage from the fire, damage caused by heat, smoke, and soot will also need redressal. The water damage caused by fire extinguishing activities is another aspect that must be addressed at the earliest to avoid secondary water damage such as mold.

Fire damage often runs deep and it takes a professional restoration team’s skills and state-of-the-art equipment to detect and amend the damage that may be invisible to the inexperienced eye.

4. Get clearance to enter the house

Await a clearance from the fire department before entering the house that has been damaged by fire. There is often hidden damage that can lead to the fire restarting. Damaged roofs and floors could also collapse and cause serious injury. Additionally, there are health effects associated with inhaling smoke and soot that must be addressed before moving back in.

Entering the house too soon can also impact the insurance claim so it’s advised to await the green signal from the fire department and the insurance company.

5. Organize the possessions

Segregating the damaged and undamaged items in the house helps to be more organized. A list of all undamaged articles along with their details such as model number, current price, and receipts is very useful while filing an insurance claim. Providing photos of these items is also advisable.

Undamaged items must be removed from the fire-damaged property to protect them from looting. These items can be stored safely in a rented storage unit restoration of the house is complete.

This assessment of damaged contents can be done by the homeowner or a professional restoration company. A professional restoration team will be able to assess if certain items can be restored or not. This can help reduce the claim and also help save valuable items that can’t be replaced with money.

6. Find a place to stay while the house gets restored

Until a professional team has restored the house and disposed of all unsafe elements including mold, smoke, soot, and unstable structures, the homeowner would need another place to stay. Most insurance policies will pay for the food, clothing, and shelter for a specified period of time. Homeowners can contact local disaster relief services such as the American Red Cross, government agencies, the local church, or family and friends for a safe and temporary place to stay in until the house is restored.

After a fire event, it is crucial to take care of one’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being. So a comfortable place to stay is crucial.

7. Restore, rebuild, and move forward

With the help of the insurance agent and a professional restoration company like SERVPRO, homeowners can begin the task of restoring and rebuilding their homes and eventually return to their lives.

It is important to deal with the right fire damage restoration company to ensure that the restoration work is accurate, economical, and swift.

SERVPRO reveals the points of origins of fires at homes and measures to prevent these fires

6/17/2021 (Permalink)

Blog summary: This SERVPRO article shares with homeowners the various fire risks at homes and precautions to take.

Fires at homes and their points of origin

According to statistics from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there are more than 350,000 home fires each year in the U.S., leading to more than 2,500 deaths. Statistically, 27% of all the annual fires reported in the U.S. happen at homes, which not only cause massive fire damage but also, tragically, lead to the majority of fire-related deaths.

SERVPRO shares the points where fires can start at homes and how homeowners can prevent them.

  • Kitchens

As in commercial spaces, kitchens are one of the biggest origin points of fires at homes. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires and fire-related injuries.

There are several fire safety rules homeowners can follow when working in kitchens:

  • Never leave a burning gas unattended, especially when working with high heat activities like frying, boiling, or broiling.
  • Move combustible items away from stoves.
  • Switch off the stove and all appliances after cooking or when leaving the kitchen.
  • Designate a safe spot to place dish towels or hot pads, away from hot surfaces.
  • Wear a securely fastened apron over billowy shirts or bottoms to prevent getting burnt.
  • Keep a Class B fire extinguisher or baking soda handy in case of fire and do not use water as it will spread oil or grease and feed the flames.
  • Bedrooms

Around 15% of electrical fires usually originate in bedrooms. These fires can prove fatal as they usually happen during the night hours. The usual causes are faulty or overloaded wiring, malfunctioning lighting, cords, space heaters, or electric blankets. Contents such as beddings, draperies, and carpeting in the bedroom easily catch fire.

Below are some tips for preventing fires in the bedroom:

  • Do not neglect any loose or worn-out wall outlets.
  • Replace extension cords, chargers, lighting cords, or other power cords as soon they show signs of wear and tear.
  • Rewire favorite lighting fixtures like lamps if the cord is worn out.
  • Don’t overload outlets.
  • Unplug devices when not in use.
  • Educate children on how fire ignites and spreads. Statistically, 40% of structure fires accidentally started by children originate in the bedroom.
  • Living rooms

Fireplaces, chimneys, wood-burning stoves, and space heaters are the usual suspects of fires in the living room.

Homeowners can practice a few safety precautions to prevent a fire in living rooms:

  • Get the chimney cleaned professionally.
  • Keep a distance between the combustibles, such as draperies and upholstered furniture, and the heat source.
  • Install a fireplace with a screen to prevent embers from escaping.
  • Completely douse a fire before leaving the house or the room.
  • Use the recommended fuel for the heat source.
  • Educate kids about the dangers of fire and the distance they should maintain from fireplaces for their safety.
  • Install smoke detectors.
  • Attics and crawl spaces

It is truly out of sight, out of mind when it comes to the inaccessible attics and crawl spaces. Surprisingly 13% of electrical fires start in these isolated spaces due to electrical failure or malfunction.

The risk of these fires is higher in older homes, where electrical work may not be up to the standard quality or may have been a result of a DIY project. It is imperative to hire a professional electrician to check these areas for issues that, if neglected, can cause serious fire damage.

  • Laundry rooms

Dryers have proven to be the biggest cause of fire in the laundry rooms, where 4% of residential fires begin.

Preventing laundry fires is usually simple:

  • Don’t overload the washer or dryer, allowing room for laundry to tumble.
  • Prevent buildup by cleaning the lint screen and drum between loads.
  • Clean the dryer exhaust vent and ducts annually.
  • Use flexible metal venting material.
  • Ensure the right voltage for the appliance.
  • Outside areas

Come summer, the grill, smoker, fire pit, and even dry vegetation become the catalyst for outdoor fires. These outdoor fires are responsible for 4% of residential fires but can be prevented by following a few rules:

  • Keep grills or smokers about 10 feet away from the house structures (including the eaves), deck railings, trailers, vehicles, or combustible materials.
  • Clean the grill or smoker after every use to prevent fuel buildup.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher handy when grilling.
  • Keep a hose or bucket of water near fire pits, and clear the area of vegetation, fuel, or other combustibles.
  • Make sure fires are completely extinguished before calling it a day.
  • Avoid friction of any sort across dry vegetation that could cause a spark.

Besides the points of origin above, there are certain fire hazards that homeowners must watch out for:

  1. Candles

Candles are a brilliant way to adorn a special occasion or create a beautiful ambiance. They can, however, become a major fire hazard if left unattended. According to the NFPA, candles caused an estimated average of just over 7,600 fires between 2014 and 2018. New Year's Day, Christmas, and New Year's Eve are prime time for candle-related fires.

Candle lighting must be accompanied by certain precautions:

  • Matches and lighters must be kept under lock and key, away from children.
  • Always extinguish candles before leaving the room.
  • Keep candle flames at least 12 inches from any combustible materials.
  • Consider other lighting options such as battery-powered flameless luminaries that are very realistic.
  1. Chemicals

Chemical fires are more common in industrial or commercial areas, but even a relatively small number of chemical fires in residences can prove to be very deadly as they are unexpected.

There are two ways chemical fires are ignited. One is when volatile vapors from gasoline and other petroleum liquids reach a flash-point temperature or when the fumes contact a source of an open flame. Another way is spontaneous combustion when chemicals combine with oxygen in the air to produce enough heat to reach a flashpoint.

Here are few measures homeowners can take to prevent these fires:

  • Use an approved container to store all flammable liquids.
  • Fill only 95 percent of the container to allow the vapors to expand without rupturing the container.
  • Tightly seal containers to prevent gas vapors from escaping.
  • Store the container at least 50 feet away from pilot lights and ignition sources, such as a water heater, space heater, or furnace.
  • Keep the containers in a detached garage or shed, away from living spaces.
  • Do not store oil-soaked or chemical-soaked rags after use as they can spontaneously combust under hot conditions in combination with oxygen.
  1. Christmas trees

A holiday tradition, Christmas trees come with certain fire risks. Since real evergreen trees dry out over time, they pose a danger of flash fire that can engulf a room in a matter of seconds. Artificial trees made with vinyl or plastic needles are safer in this regard, but an electrical fire is still a risk.

Here are a few precautions to prevent Christmas tree fires:

  • Unplug tree lights on the Christmas tree when leaving the house or when sleeping.
  • Regularly check the natural trees to ensure they are not too dry.
  • Ensure a full water reservoir to prevent the tree from becoming tinder-dry.
  • Older Christmas tree lights that use incandescent bulbs generate a lot of heat and can be replaced by lights using LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs that are safer.
  • Faulty light strings must be changed or repaired.

The Five Most Important Facts to Remember When Dealing with Fire Damage Restoration Services in Texas

4/20/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: The fire damage restoration professionals at SERVPRO offer advice about dealing with serious fire damage to a home or business in Texas. They explore the top facts about water and fire damage and what to expect from local fire restoration companies when they take on the job.

Fires are traumatic for everyone involved, and being able to act quickly after the event is crucial to the recovery process. While flames are the most prominent cause of damage, many other issues leave a mark on the place. Home or business owners can prevent further damage to their properties, but it is important to know what professional fire damage restoration services can do for the building.

Five Handy Facts About Fire Damage Restoration Services

The destructive power of a fire is tremendous to witness, but it can be sad and daunting for the owner of the property to see a lifetime of work and memory under a blackened exterior. Fire damage restoration is possible with a reliable local service, like SERVPRO.

Here are five handy facts to remember when faced with fire damage as a home or business owner.

#1 Safety

A fire-damaged building might be dangerous to enter, even after the flames are extinguished. The temptation to begin the cleanup process might be strong for the owner of the property, but it is always better to leave the cleanup to fire damage restoration service professionals, like SERVPRO. They are insured and trained to handle unstable burned buildings with the utmost care.

#2 Soot

Soot is the fine, black dust left behind after a fire. It is the by-product of burning coal, wood, or substances with an oil base. Soot inhalation can lead to health effects. If there is severe soot contamination in a home or building following a fire, the owner will need to call an equipped building restoration service to deal with the fire damage and begin cleanup safely.

#3 Water Damage

A surprising result of fire is water damage since it is one of the most useful substances for putting out the flames. The damages that water can inflict on the residential or commercial property are significant, especially when left to pool and fester.

After the fire has been completely extinguished, the home or commercial property needs to dry completely. Otherwise, mildew and mold begin to grow, and health effects abound. Professional water restoration companies like SERVPRO have the experience and skill for proper water removal and water cleanup following a fire.

If mold does become an issue, mold remediation companies deal well with the problem. The professionals at SERVPRO deal with this problem after a fire more than one might imagine, initiating mold removal to preserve what is left of the home or business.

#4 Textile Damage

Fabrics and other textiles within a building are difficult to restore. Removing soot and smoke odors from these materials can be nearly impossible, including carpets, clothing, and draperies. Commercial water damage companies like SERVPRO are not magicians, but they do have the tools and skill to remove many odors and stains from carpets and delicate items.

#5 Fire Damage Restoration Consultation

An essential thing to remember is the invaluable help that fire restoration professionals provide in dealing with fire, smoke, and water damage. Their experience equips them to effectively handle the cleanup and restoration process, quickly assessing damages and determining what can be saved or restored.

Professionals like SERVPRO also remove the water that remains after extinguishing the fire, drying every surface thoroughly, and preventing dangerous mold growth. If there’s more to do, their skills also cover air duct cleaning, flood cleanup, mold removal, and other fire or water restoration services.

Call the professional fire damage restoration technicians at SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford, Texas at (817) 595-0004 for high-quality services day and night. They work from their location at 3717 Commerce Place Suite E Bedford, TX 76021. They will inspect the damage, assess the situation, and clean and repair the damages as quickly as possible.

4 Fire Damage Restoration Mistakes Property Owners Can Avoid

2/23/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: The experts at SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford discuss four fire damage restoration mistakes property owners can avoid to protect their property and prevent unnecessary damage or expense.

The damage after a fire can be devastating, and the idea of fire damage restoration can feel overwhelming. Even worse, the effects of fire damage can continue long after the fire has been extinguished.

SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford is committed to guiding homeowners and property owners through this difficult time by helping them avoid the most common fire damage restoration mistakes.

4 Fire Damage Restoration Mistakes Property Owners Can Avoid

Mistake #1: Making repairs and cleaning the property before notifying the insurance company.

The insurance company will need to see the full extent of the damage before fire damage restoration can begin. Don’t remove anything from the property or make any repairs before an insurance adjuster can perform a proper inspection.

Leave things exactly as they are so that everything damaged can be properly accounted for and the insurance company can make an accurate loss assessment.

Mistake #2: Failing to secure the property to prevent additional damage.

Properties are often compromised after fire damage, leaving them exposed and vulnerable to further damage. Avoid this mistake by contacting a fire damage restoration company immediately to secure the property and prevent unnecessary damage in the long run.

Damaged roofs need to be tarped, while broken windows and doors need to be boarded and secured to protect the property from the elements. Securing the property also protects against unauthorized entry, including thieves or looters.

Mistake #3: Spending too much time on the property before essential repairs and cleaning can be completed.

Active flames are not the only risks of fire damage. There are other dangers a fire can leave behind, such as unseen structural damage and significant health risks.

Roofs and walls can collapse at any time from unseen or worsening damage. These risks not only increase the chance of further damage and expense, but they can pose a threat to anyone who enters the property.

There are also health risks and concerns due to smoke inhalation, soot residue, and other harmful particles that a fire can leave behind.

The Texas Department of Health warns against the long-term health risks associated with exposure to smoke components. These may include health effects.

The safest thing to do is avoid the property as much as possible until professional fire damage restoration is underway. In addition to major repairs, these companies offer water cleanup, mold removal, soot and smoke damage cleanup, and other services to help return the property to a safe condition.

Mistake #4: Not hiring a professional fire damage restoration company right away.

Proper fire damage restoration requires specialized equipment and training. Immediately hiring a professional fire damage restoration company like SERVPRO can help homeowners avoid all the mistakes discussed here and more.

Winter Fire Hazards to be Aware of For Your Business

12/17/2020 (Permalink)

With the changing of the seasons comes cooler weather, and for most of us, it is a welcome change. Who doesn’t love snuggling up before a warm fire at this time of year? We’ve pulled out the sweaters and fluffy blankets to stay toasty, and most of us will employ a space heater or two before spring comes around again.

In your place of business, you will be taking those extra steps to make sure your staff is comfortable during the colder months, as well. Let’s make sure they stay fire safe! Here are some winter fire hazards to be aware of:

  • Most businesses won’t be using a fireplace to warm their interiors, but those who work out of doors may build fires on the job site to keep hands and toes functional. Make sure your crew is careful to use metal receptacles for those bonfires and that they place them far away from flammable materials such as wood and linens. If a wind comes up, things could get dangerous fast.
  • In your offices, the use of space heaters will be helpful. Inspect every unit used to make sure that cords and plugs are in good working condition, and enforce a policy that ensures they are never left running when the room is unoccupied or when the workday is over. Designate someone to oversee this; they should be the person who is normally last out the door. As the owner, it may very well be you.
  • Employ a landscape company to remove leaves and dead vegetation from your property. In the event of a fire in your building, space that is cleared from the foundation and exterior walls will help firefighters to gain access as well as prevent a fire from spreading further.
  • When repairing or renovating your offices or outbuildings, use fire-resistant materials whenever possible. Flooring, furniture, and paint can all be produced or treated after purchase to make them more fire safe.

The team here at SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford is always available to help you keep your business fire safe. In the event of damages sustained from fire or water, we have the experience and know how to complete a cleanup project quickly and efficiently, getting you back to work as soon as possible.

Office Fire Safety Precautions to Observe

10/6/2020 (Permalink)

In the event that a fire ever occurs in your office, it’s important to have a few fire safety precautions in place to keep your employees and commercial building prepared for dealing with one. While having a fire extinguisher and smoke detectors goes without saying, do your employees know what to do if the alarm sounds or they have to use the extinguisher?

Here are a few fire safety precautions that you should ensure are in place:

  • Make sure your employees know how to use a fire extinguisher. Every 6 months or so, hold a training session where your employees learn how to use a fire extinguisher if they don’t already know how to use one. Something as simple as this could be the difference between an accidental office fire from a microwave or a lighter being extinguished or burning up everything in sight. Here’s a great article on how to use a fire extinguisher.
  • Regularly change your smoke detectors’ batteries and ensure one is installed in every room. As a general rule of thumb, test your smoke detectors once a month and replace their batteries twice a year. By ensuring that your smoke detectors do their job and have the battery juice to sound, you can prevent office fires whenever smoke occurs first.
  • Share your office’s evacuation plan. Depending on the size of your office, you need to have one or multiple evacuation plans to adhere to the building’s fire code. Make sure to take into account any legal requirements for fire evacuation plans before you post them around the building and share them.
  • Do a few fire drills. Sharing your office’s evacuation plan isn’t enough. Hold a couple fire drills and run your employees through the proper evacuation routes so they know where to go if the building catches on fire. Rehearsing an evacuation plan makes it that much easier to take action in the event that a fire actually occurs.

With all of these fire safety precautions in place, we hope that you’ll never have to manage the aftermath of an office fire. However, If you ever end up dealing with fire damage, water damage, mold, or other natural disaster damage, give SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford a call at (817) 595-0004. Our team of professionals are trained and equipped to help you manage restoration and cleaning.

What to Expect From a Fire Damage Restoration Project

9/29/2020 (Permalink)

A fire damage event is difficult for the home or business owner on many levels, and the restoration process that follows can be intimidating. Today we are sharing what you can expect from a fire restoration project. Each fire event is a little different, and each will require a unique solution, although the overall general process stays the same. The steps we are listing below will illustrate the SERVPRO process for the average fire damage emergency.

  • Emergency Contact. Your restoration process begins the moment that you contact us. Our representative will ask you questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us to respond with the appropriate equipment and resources for your particular situation.
  • Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment. Our team will carefully inspect and test all the adjoining rooms of your home or business to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is vital to us, allowing us to develop the perfect plan of action for your property.
  • Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service. Fire damage will often compromise the condition of windows, walls, and roofing. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we will board up missing windows and walls, and place tarps on damaged areas of the roof.
  • Water Removal and Drying. If water damage is present, the water removal process will begin almost immediately, with the goal of removing the majority of the water. Our team will then employ dehumidifiers and air movers to remove any remaining water and complete the drying process.
  • Removal of Smoke and Soot From All Surfaces. SERVPRO uses specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and all other surfaces.
  • Cleaning and Sanitizing. We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. Our team uses a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to the condition they were in before the fire. We are also trained to remove lingering odors, using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.
  • Restoration. This is the final step - getting your home or business back to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, installing new carpet, or painting surfaces, or it may entail major repairs, such as the reconstruction of various rooms or areas.

Here at SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford, we are ready to help if your Bedford home or business suffers from damage due to fire or water. You can also count on us when it comes to mold remediation and prevention.

Safety Tips For Using A Fire Extinguisher

9/22/2020 (Permalink)

OSHA states that fire is the most common emergency occurrence owners of homes and small businesses should plan for. One of the best ways to be prepared is by having a fire extinguisher readily available, making sure it’s properly maintained and audited, and by being educated on its proper use. This will already be a fire safety requirement for any business, and it’s a good idea for the homeowner, as well.

OSHA requires employers to train their staff thoroughly on how to use a fire extinguisher correctly and to accurately assess the situation if a fire is to occur so that it can be determined if/when an evacuation needs to take place. OSHA has established annual training for employees as a minimal requirement for all places of business, and this training is helpful for homeowners as well.

The PASS training technique is recommended:

  • P. Pull the pin on the extinguisher.
  • A. Aim the nozzle of the hose at the base of the fire.
  • S. Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
  • S. Sweep the nozzle from side to side, directed at the base of the flames, until the fire is extinguished.

Once someone knows how to properly operate a fire extinguisher, they should then also be trained to follow fire safety protocol. Such training should enable anyone to be able to:

  • Locate and activate the fire alarm.
  • Call the fire department and emergency responders immediately.
  • Determine a safe evacuation route that will direct people away from flames, excessive heat, and smoke. They should also know how to keep the route from becoming blocked.
  • Use the PASS technique for discharging a fire extinguisher (outlined above), and know the importance of backing away from the area if the fire flares up again.
  • Evacuate the area immediately if the fire is still going and the extinguisher is empty, or if the fire grows beyond what can be safely handled without fire department personnel.

NOTE: Fire extinguishers are made to handle small fires only. If the environment becomes too dangerous, everyone should know when and how to evacuate. Excessive smoke and heat, impaired evacuation routes, and poor visibility are all conditions that can evolve very quickly, and people need to understand that safety comes first and foremost.

SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford is here to help with cleanup projects both large and small and are dedicated to getting your business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned. We also handle mold prevention and remediation, as well as fire damage and water damage.

Holiday Fire Awareness

9/26/2019 (Permalink)

With Halloween a little over a month away, it’s officially spooky season! It’s definitely my favorite time of the year. I love all the decorations, pumpkins, and the cooler weather coming in is always a plus. But, with that comes a heightened risk of fire damage. Did you know that on average, Halloween decorations cause about $13 million dollars’ worth of damage each year? Along with that, decorations caused about 860 home structure fires per year between 2009-2013! That’s just the beginning – those numbers climb through the rest of the year with fire damages escalating because of the holiday season.

It’s important to make sure that we are fire aware when it comes to decorations and the holidays. Make sure that all decorations are away from heat sources, including flowy costumes. Make sure you blow out your candle when you leave the room, and if you want to have the smells of a candle, but not the flame invest in a wax warmer – though make sure you follow good safety habits when it comes to electrical heating elements. It may not have fire, but it still can be hot! If you like the look of candles, but don’t mind not having a scent – get battery operated candles! They come in various sizes, shapes, and colors and often times are made out of wax. They are fireproof, pet proof, and kid proof!

If you found yourself in the midst of a fire because of a holiday decoration mishap, give us a call today at 817.595.0004!

Fall Fire Safety

9/25/2019 (Permalink)

I feel like we do one of these blogs posts a year, but Halloween/Fall fire safety is incredibly important! I don’t know about you, but for me, nothing is better than lighting a fall smelling candle to usher in some coziness in your home even if it is 90 degrees outside still.

But, with the new season, it’s important to remember fire safety as well. We may not light a whole lot of candles in the house during the spring and summer time, which is why it can easily slip your mind when it comes to lighting them after a long spring season.

Make sure to always blow out your candles before leaving a room, and make sure to put them away from pets. I’ve seen a lot of posts on social media about overly curious cats getting their whiskers and eyebrows singed or catching their tails on fire. Make sure nothing like a drape or a blanket can get caught in the way of an open flame.

If you’ve found yourself among the flames of a candle that’s gotten out of control, give us a call today at 817.595.0004!

Does Your Family Have A Fire Plan?

4/8/2019 (Permalink)

House fires are unpredictable. As much as we try to prevent them, sometimes the unthinkable happens and a little spark from faulty wiring you didn’t know about can leave your home engulfed in flames. When this happens, do your and your family have a plan for getting out of your home and to a safe meeting point? A fire escape plan is an invaluable tool to make sure you and your family knows just what to do incase of a fire.

  1. Take a weekend and draw up a floor plan of your home for a visual to plan out a fire escape route. Walk through your home with your floor plan and note all the possible exit routes.
  2. Keep leashes and carriers by the door, and make sure your pet always wears her collar and tags if she escapes during the chaos. Note where your pet goes when scared to tell a firefighter if you don’t have the opportunity to get them out. Train your pet to come when they’re called.
  3. Choose a meeting place away from your home like a neighbor’s mailbox, sign post, or light post and mark the spot on your map.
  4. Do a tour with your entire family to make sure that they understand the plan.

Spring Fire Safety

Always check over your grill before you use it to make sure that the parts will all function as they should.

The weather is heating up which means soon it will be time to bust out those grills or gather around a campfire with your friends. As always, we have some great tips to help you make the most of your time without causing damage or injury with fire. Check them out below!

  • Check over all the parts of your grill before using it. This includes the propane tank, the hose, and any connecting pieces.
  • Make sure your grill has been properly cleaned. Stray bits of old food or leaves can cause flare ups and burns.
  • Make sure the grill is set up away from anything flammable such as trees, fences, and buildings. It should be in an open outdoor area.
  • Never leave a lit grill unattended.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended near an open flame or something that may still be hot.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case something does go wrong.

Fast Facts About Fire

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Understanding how fires start can help you prevent fire damage at home.

Knowing how fires start can help you come up with a plan to prevent them. Preparation is a key aspect of avoiding any disaster. Use these tips to help you figure our how you can prepare your home or business and avoid fire damage.

  • Around 50% of home fires are due to cooking accidents. You can avoid fire damage in the kitchen by making sure you keep a fire extinguisher somewhere easy to reach and making sure you know how to use it. Also, make sure that you never leave a hot appliance unattended; always pay attention to what you are doing!
  • Over 15% of residential fires are caused by electrical appliances malfunctioning or other issues with electrical components of the house such as the heating system. With this in mind, make sure that you have your home inspected often to make sure everything is working as it should. Especially at the turn of seasons when you may not have used your heater or air conditioner in a while.
  • California, Texas, and Georgia lead the nation in fire deaths in 2016. Having plan to get out of your house in an emergency is one of the most important things you can do to keep your family safe. Make sure the plan includes instructions for everyone – including pets – to get out safely in case a fire occurs, and practice the plan so that your family will know exactly what to do.

Choosing the Right Smoke Detector

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

Having a smoke detector in your home is critical to making sure you and your family are safe. You should have one in every bedroom and on every floor of your home. You probably already knew how important these little alarms are, but do you know how to make sure that your smoke detector is a good one?

Smoke detectors can come in any size and shape, and they can be as cheap as $5 or as expensive as $150, so with all of these options, how do you know what to choose? First, there are two different types of detectors: ionized and photoelectric. Some devices are a combination of these two types. Ionized smoke detectors work best when there are actual flames present. They are quick to sound the alarm when a lot of heat is produced. Photoelectric smoke detectors work well with fires that start slow and tend to smolder and create a lot of smoke. Smoldering fires like these are usually pretty silent, so people do not always notice them at first; some people will actually develop breathing problems and pass out before they realize that a fire is occurring.

Both types of alarms are designed to detect fire no matter what, and both will be sufficient to get you and your loved ones out of the house in time as long as you keep up with maintenance such as testing the alarms and replacing batteries when needed. If you feel the need, you can put a mixture of the two types of alarms throughout your house. Regardless of what type you choose, make sure you have them in the kitchen, bedrooms, and any other important places in your home.

If your house or office suffers from a fire loss, call SERVPRO® of Hurst-Euless-Bedford today at 817.595.0004.

Halloween Fire Safety

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

Fall is here, and soon it will be time to bust out the costumes and carve some pumpkins! Nothing puts a damper on Halloween festivities like an accident, so follow the tips below to make sure that you have a happy and safe Halloween!

  • Choosing a Costume: Costumes are arguably the best thing about Halloween, but if you aren’t careful, they can cause a lot of damage. Be careful if you choose to have a costume with long trailing pieces of fabric, and if there is a mask involved, make sure the person wearing it can easily see out of the eye holes so that nothing gets caught up in a candle or other source of fire.
  • Decorations: Paper decorations, cornstalks, and other adornments can all ignite easily if they are left too close to an open flame or a heat source. Even a simple light bulb that gets too hot could ignite paper. When you are gearing up for some spooky festivities, make sure to place decorations in safe places, or you will really be in for a scary night!
  • Candles: Once you’ve carved your pumpkins, you will need to light them up, but be careful any time you are handling a flame! Use candles and holders that won’t tip over easily, and always supervise lit flames. To avoid fire hazards altogether, consider using battery-operated tea lights or glow stick inside your jack-o-lanterns instead.
  • Stop, Drop, and Roll: This skill is one of the first things that comes to mind when discussing fire safety, and for good reason! It can literally save a life! This technique can smother fire that has caught on someone’s clothing. Be sure to go over how to stop, drop, and roll with your kids before you hit the streets for trick or treating.

Now that you have gone over the tips to keep you and your family safe this year, you can be sure to enjoy your Halloween without having to worry about any potential disasters. If your home suffers fire damage, call SERVPRO® of Hurst-Euless-Bedford at 817.595.0004 to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Putting out a Grease Fire

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

Cooking is not usually considered a dangerous hobby, and many people find it relaxing. Keep your cooking from going south by making your kitchen as safe as you can. Oil is a big ingredient for many dishes, but unfortunately, it can be easy to ignite, and grease fires are not easily put out with water. If you have a grease fire in your kitchen, you need to act quickly to keep the fire from spreading. Follow these steps to put out a grease fire in your kitchen;

  • Turn the Heat Off: This step may seem obvious, but in the heat of the moment, you may be panicking and forget to do so. Leave the pot where it is or you risk burning yourself and spilling oil which could spread the fire.
  • Put a Metal Lid on the Pot: Fire uses oxygen to burn, so putting a metal lid on the pot will cut off that supply of oxygen. DO NOT use a glass lid; the heat could cause it to shatter. Once the fire burns through the small amount of oxygen left in the pot, it will put itself out. Keep in mind that this will only work if the fire is contained to the pot and has not spread to any other part of the kitchen.
  • Use Baking Soda or Salt: This is another trick that will work if the fire is relatively small and contained. Baking soda releases carbon dioxide which smothers the fire, but if the flames are already too large, this may not work. You will need a lot of baking soda for this. Another trick you could try is using salt. Salt is able to absorb a lot of heat, so it is able to remove so much heat that the grease simply can’t support its own combustion any more.
  • Use a Fire Extinguisher: Every household should have a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible part of their kitchen. Once you have gotten your fire extinguisher and you have had it properly inspected, you should know how to properly use it, or you could make the flames worse. Do not stand directly in front of the fire when you spray the extinguisher, or the pressure from it can actually spray the grease further and spread the fire. Stand back at a safe distance and spray the fire. This may take a little longer than you would think, so continue using the extinguisher until you are sure the fire is out. Using a fire extinguisher will contaminate your kitchen, so make sure you give it a thorough cleaning before cooking in it again.
  • Call 911: If the fire does get out of control, call 911. It is better to do this sooner than later. Get yourself and any family members out of the house until the fire department arrives.

If you need restoration after fire damage, call SERVPRO® of Hurst-Euless-Bedford today at 817-595-0004.

STEPS TO EXTINGUISH ELECTRICAL FIRES

4/9/2018 (Permalink)

STEPS TO EXTINGUISH ELECTRICAL FIRES

Electricity is a hidden danger to the residents in your community. Because it is so frequently used, most people tend to underestimate the risk potential and dangers that come with electrical fires.

In fact, approximatley 7 percent of all residential fires stem from an electrical source, and because they tend to be difficult to identify, they are usually much more dangerous and destructive than other types of fires.

To keep your community safe, please keep these tips for combatting an electrical fire handy in the event of an emergency and share them with friends and family. Knowing how to respond quickly could be the difference between a small fire and a devastating disaster.

IF AN ELECTRICAL FIRE STARTS

  1. If the device that is causing the electrical fire is found, and you can reach the cord and outlet safely, unplug it.
  2. If the fire is small, you may put it out by smothering it with baking soda.
  3. It may also be put out by removing the oxygen source with clothing or a heavy blanket if the fire is small and it is safe to do so.
  4. Don’t use water to put it out. Water is a natural conductor of electricity and if you throw water on an electrical fire, you can get shocked or electrocuted. Also, water may enable to fire to spread by conducting electricity throughout the room and potentially igniting flammable materials.
  5. Check your fire extinguisher. Electrical fires are a Class C fire, which means that you will need an extinguisher that is appropriate for this type of fire. Most residential fire extinguishers are multi-purpose and labeled ABC, but it is crucial to verify this before using it on an electrical fire.

Electrical fires result in almost 500 deaths and more than 1,400 injuries annually. They are very dangerous.

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE ELECTRICAL FIRE

  1. GET OUT!! You and any family members need to leave as soon as you can to prevent injury or loss of life. Do not try to be a hero.
  2. Close the door as you leave to contain the fire.
  3. Call 911 as soon as you are at a safe distance from the fire.
  4. Do not re-enter your home until the fire has been contained by firefighters.

While it is important to remember these steps to take appropriate action during an electrical fire, it’s equally, if not more, important to take actions to prevent them from occurring in the first place.

HOW TO STOP AN ELECTRICAL FIRE FROM OCCURRING

  1. Invite an electrician to inspect the home to ensure it meets the safety provisions in the NEC. They can also identify if the home would benefit from AFCI protection. These devices recognize potential electrical hazards that are not detected by standard breakers and can be especially helpful in older homes. They can prevent between 50 to 75 percent of certain types of electrical fires.
  2. Always use light bulbs that match the recommended wattage for the fixture or lamp.
  3. Install child precautions when they are present to prevent accidental electrocution.
  4. Never use extension cords with heating units or air conditions. They should only be used temporarily.
  5. Do not overload the outlets. If additional circuits are necessary, consult with an electrician.
  6. Pay attention if you notice any warning signs of electrical failure. This includes flickering lights, buzzing sounds from the electrical system, and circuit breakers that often trip or fuses that frequently blow.
  7. Inspect electrical devices periodically to determine if there is wear or fraying of the wires. Do not use devices that show signs of fraying or wear.
  8. Contact an electrician if you smell anything burning or see smoke coming from an appliance, cord or the plug, or if you see an outlet that is discolored.
  9. Only use portable space heaters with a safety mechanism that shuts them off if they tip over. Do not leave them on overnight or place them next to combustible materials.

Practice good fire safety habits. Install smoke detectors in every room of the house and testing them monthly to ensure their batteries are working.

Now that you are safe, you will need fire and water mitigation.

Most Common Types of Fire

2/12/2018 (Permalink)

The 4 Most Common Types of Fire

While a fire can start anywhere at any time, below is a list of the top four most common causes of fires. This information may even help you to prevent starting a fire.

1. Kitchen fires are the most common type of fire. Whether it is from burning food, grease, or an electrical problem, often all three can cause a fire. Grease is the major cause of a fire it can grow and spread quickly, getting out of control and spreading to other rooms of your home, before the fire department arrives.

2. Electrical fires are the second most common type of house fire. When you have electricity and water it can be bad. Often, if the wiring is old or not grounded a fire can start and someone can be electrocuted. Electrical fires can be caused by several different things, including old wiring, faulty wiring, broken or old breaker boxes, faulty appliances, and the improper use of outlets.

3. During the cold winter months’ portable heaters and electric blankets start their fair share of fires. If you must use a portable heater make sure you one that has a timer and an automotive shut-off. In place of electric blankets try using a heavy quilt.

4. Smoking is the fourth leading cause of fires. If you can smoke outside and make sure you put your cigarette out before going back inside your home. People fall asleep smoking more often than most people can imagine there are nearly a thousand deaths a year in the United States, because of smoking not to mention the loss off property. It does not take much for an ember off the tip of a cigarette to catch a chair, couch, rug, or curtains on fire, so be extra cautious when smoking in your home.

Smoke and soot can be very sneaky and invasive possibly causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience here at SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford allows us to be able to assess the extent of the damage to develop a plan of action.

Smoke & Soot Facts:

Smoke flows around plumbing systems, it seeps through any holes used by your plumbing to go from floor to floor. Depending on what type of smoke it is may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

Wet & dry are the two different types of smoke. As a result, there are different types of soot residue following a fire.  Before any restoration begins, SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford will perform a test on the soot to determine what type of smoke damage occurred.  The cleaning process will then be based on the result of the test.  West Smoke is produced from any plastic & rubber.  Dry smoke is produced when you burn paper and wood.  Protein Fire Residue is produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire and causes and extremely pungent odor.

October is National Fire Prevention Month.

The American Red Cross says that on average there are 36 people that are injured and 7 people killed per year due to house fires. Also they state that every year there is 7 billion dollars worth of damage as a direct result of house fires.

There are many things you can do to help prevent a fire in your home and help you avoid being a statistic.

5 Steps When Faced with Fire Damage in Hurst Euless Bedford

10/13/2017 (Permalink)

Step 1: EMERGENCY SERVICES & BOARD UP

Once firefighters are onsite and attempting to extinguish the fire, they may have to knock out windows and cut holes into walls and the roof to provide ventilation. Doing this will provide ventilation and will slow down the fire’s growth.  Once they have successfully extinguished the fire we are able to start extracting any standing water, plus properly board up any holes in the exterior of your home.  The purpose of boarding up your structure is to protect your home and your belongings from the elements.

Step 2: ASSESS THE DAMAGE

We will evaluate the severity of the fire damage to your home or business. Depending on the extent of the damage and what type of fire it was we will estimate the full scope of work needed to remediate your possessions and property to their original conditions.

Step 3: SMOKE & SOOT REMOVAL / DEODORIZATION

Smoke and soot contain chemicals that are harmful to your health. They can also permeate drapes carpets, basically, all textiles will have been vulnerable to be affected by the fire.  With immediate cleaning by our extensively trained staff using industry approved methods we eliminate not only the odor but the potential risk of breathing in these toxins.

Step 4: THE CLEANING & DRYING PROCESS

SERVPRO of Hurst Euless Bedford will now be able to extract what remaining water they can throughout all effected areas. Once this is done, we place dehumidifiers that will pull the moisture from the air and industrial air movers to accelerate evaporation.  This is the fastest most controlled drying process possible.  Once every part of your home has reached the dry standard we go back through and cover all areas that were affected with an antimicrobial disinfectant.

Step 5: CLEANING & RESTORATION OF YOUR PERSONAL PROPERTY

We have a dedicated space where we handle disinfecting and removing hazardous soot and smoke residue from all of your salvageable personal belongings. From family heirlooms, framed artwork, to your kitchen’s glassware and dishes.  Our restoration goal for your personal items is to get them back to the exact state they were in prior to the fire.

If your home or business has been affected by a fire, we here at SERVPRO of Hurst-Euless-Bedford are always here to help! Our phones are answered 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week just give us a call (817-595-0004) and we’ll be on our way!

Fire Damage - Bedford, Texas

An electrical fire in the attic was the cause of severe damage to this Bedford, Texas home. The insurance company called us out to assess the damages . We determined we needed to tear out the ceiling in order to properly clean the area. We deodorized and sanitized the home and prepared it for reconstruction. The homeowner was very pleased with our service.

Avoid overloading your home's electrical circuits

  • Minimize the amount of electrical equipment you plug into each outlet. Minimize your use of power strips as much as possible, trying instead to limit the use of each outlet to the 2 plugs it provides.
  • If your home is very old, it may have very few circuits, as plug-in appliances and equipment were not as numerous when the home was built. Have an electrician run new wiring and install new circuit breakers on your electrical panel.
  • Replace or discard any frayed wiring
  • While electrical tape can be used to provide temporary protection against arcing or melting of exposed conductors, it should not be used as a permanent solution.
  • Replace any old wiring in your home
  • If you are relying heavily on extension cords or if your circuit breakers trip regularly, you are likely drawing more power than your old wiring can handle. Have an electrician inspect your home's wiring as soon as possible.
  • Older homes may contain aluminum wiring, which poses a more significant risk of degrading and causing fires than copper wiring.
  • Having an electrician replace all or most of your home's wiring will provide a virtual guarantee against electrical fires for decades.
  • Ensure that every electrical product you use is UL-listed
  • Some products, like extension cords and batteries, are often counterfeited using extremely flimsy and cheap copper that poses an immense fire risk. On these types of products, UL utilizes a holographic logo that is difficult to fake817-595-0004 or 817-595-2506Follow us on Twitter @SERVPROHEBG
